Sony didn't intend for the PS2's shelf-life to be as long as it was after the launch of the PS3, that was more of a failure on the new console's ability to draw consumers while the PS2's low price and already established game library garnered attention from people looking for a cheaper, but still Sony, alternative.

Then why is the PS2 still around? The PS3 is a thriving and profitable piece of hardware. Has been for a long time now. The PS2 is still on the market because people will still buy the PS2. Microsoft and Sony want the 360 and PS3 to be the PS2 next generation. That means those consoles will probably be around for quite some time still.

2015 is not happening. Sorry. The writing is on the wall for late 2013 to late 2014. Microsoft and Sony are upping their R&D costs. Publishers announcing 2014 games (like the sequel to Homefront) are being secretive about the consoles those games are on. Developers like Epic have confirmed that they know what's happening. Nintendo's launching their next console in 2012. Microsoft and Sony aren't waiting until 2015. Now that Nintendo's shown their hand Microsoft or Sony will react. Whichever of those two acts first will automatically trigger the other to reveal their plans.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I haven't seen a PS2 for sale anywhere in a while and there's certainly no on-going support for it. When's the last time you've heard of that big PS2 title release?

It may not be 2015, but it's still a few years off. From what I've heard Bungie's new game has already been in development for sometime, years maybe? In any case I see it coming out sooner than the next console generation, especially since the consoles all chose different release dates and that it's at least rumored for now that the game will be multiplatform. It would be strange to already be creating a title with two new major consoles in mind and a pain in the ass.

The PS2 is still on the market. It is still in production. People are still buying it. That's just a fact whether you've seen one recently or not.

I see it coming out before the next generation of consoles too. Why? Because it's been confirmed for current generation consoles. Has been for a long time now. That means it'll most likely be a Q1/Q2 2013 release. By that time the new consoles will have been unveiled but not on the market.

Every console has has shared a similar life as the PS2 has, the PS2 has just been more successful at it. The NES was still around when the SNES was introduced, the SNES when the N64 was released, etc. As for Sony even the original Playsation was still in production when the PS2 was released. It just so happens that the PS2's life has remained longer than all these other examples. Which I still believe was in part to the PS3's initial failure at launch.

Okay? What is the point you're trying to make? I've already said that if the PS2 was kept around to help subsidize the money initially lost on the PS3 (which is true) then why is it still being produced? Sony makes money off each PS3 sold and all the other revenue streams that come with it. The PS2 is still being produced because there is still a demand for it. Especially in developing markets. When the Next Box and PS4 hit the market Microsoft and Sony would love to put the current generation consoles in the current role the PS2 occupies. Common sense dictates that.

And no not every console has followed the life cycle, even a similar one, of the PS2 because not every console has been a successful venture.

I... don't think I ever argued that such intentions weren't in the works for the current generation's console, it'd be stupid not to. My only argument is that it's just not in the immediate future. Hell I'm not even sure why this argument is even happening because I partially agree with you. Sony even stands to make more money off the PS3 than they do now, people who have really been swayed will more than likely flock to the PS3 during a price drop, most likely in a similar fashion as the PS2. As for Mircosoft, I think they're plan for the long run will probably be game support and DLC rather than console sales.

Anyway, yes... stuff.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

I could have sworn it was 2012...but I could be wrong.

Unlikely. Microsoft and Sony have said that their new motion sensing devices are to extend the life of both systems until 2015. That is more than enough proof, imo.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I could have sworn it was 2012...but I could be wrong.

An interview with Shane Kim from 2009:
VB: Can you think about postponing the next-generation console launch if you introduce something big in mid-cycle like Project Natal?

SK: We firmly believe that the Xbox 360 has a life cycle through 2015 (10 years after the launch). Project Natal is a great innovation. It will work with every Xbox 360 sold. It's not about pushing more pixels on the screen. It's about how to break down barriers that stop people from playing games.

Of course, he might be pushing the date out a bit to keep the element of surprise against competitors, but I assume he meant at least 2014.

I also think that MS will want to give the Kinect a while as the "flagship" product to become successful and profitable, though they could easily build it into the next system and go from there.

Back on topic with that in mind, I doubt Bungie will want to wait three or four years before making a profit again, so I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing something on the current systems.
