Subject: Halo, Periodic Table of Elements, and how they may be related....

Hello, a few months ago, during my science class, in school,I was staring at the periodic table of elements cuz im weird and oddly fascinated by it. While staring, i noticed some interesting things that may relate to Halo and one of the games most notable Spartans, Master Chief John-117. This is what i found:

Seventh Column of the table is titled the HALOgens... At the very bottom is the recently discovered element, Ununseptium, element number 117.

I know its not much, but its enough to have a discussion about and ponder wheather it be coincidence or if Bungie isnt just history magnets... Let be known what you think of this information. Thank you for reading :D

Insanity. Bungie sure owes Mendeleyev.

  • 09.23.2011 4:15 AM PDT

I do not see the relationship to history... perhaps science.

  • 09.23.2011 5:15 AM PDT

Indeed... Unless Bungie IS Mendeleyev! That'd be quite the time-twister. O_o

  • 09.23.2011 5:16 AM PDT

bungie is weird like that

  • 09.23.2011 5:19 AM PDT

Not in this statement, no. But throughout Bungie's games, there is much historical influence. A better known example being Halo's Spartan program. It was very similar to the training of a warrior in the Greek Spartan society, rigorously trained from a young age to be the best warriors of the age. Halo's Spartan armor was called Mjolnir, from the mythic god, Thor's, hammer. The Spartan III's consisted of 300 candidates, the same number that defended that one pass (this is where history gets foggy so t bear with me). Theres so much more I could attempt to explain that I don't have the patience to write.

We should know better, because we are better.

Except that Element 117 was discovered after Halo was released. Purely coincidental.

Whether it was discovered before or after Halo its location would always be the theoretical location of element 117.

GENIUS!!! this is why i love bungie

Perhaps they predicted it...

We’re flawed because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had.

This could be a true link...

I highly doubt Bungie had the periodic table in mind when they were creating Halo.

  • 09.23.2011 10:36 AM PDT

Do you also doubt that they had the Greeks in mind when creating both Halo and Marathon? They had plenty of history in mind, why not the elements?

When working references to something into a game, references to the periodic table will be low on the list. As for 117, it could have been there, or it could be some odd element that has 117 protons but acts like it has a full electron shell making it more like a Noble Gas than a Halogen.

Im looking at where its located, not what its more like, cuz it is at the bottom of the Halogen/Seventh column... And this seems to be quite a lot of coincidences, imo...

If that was directed at me, then yes, I have the table right in front of me.

8/5/08 Bungie Favorites- NoEnd
7/1/09 Bungie Favorites- RECON Devil
9/9/09 Bungie Favorites- Champion
5/22/10 HaloCharts Favs- Prey

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a motivating factor in giving the chief 117

No, ExcessiveFaun6 is not my real gamertag.

Cortana: The message just repeats. "Regret, Regret, Regret."
Miranda: Any idea what it means?
Sgt. Johnson: Dear Humanity... we regret being alien bastards. We regret coming to Earth. And we most definitely regret that the Corps just blew up our raggedy-ass fleet!
Marines: Hoo-rah!

As far as the Seventh Column relation goes, first of all thats a Bungie thing, not related in any way to Halo. I'm thinking the HALOgens is purely coincidental. As to the origin of the phrase Seventh Column? Definite possibility.

And the number 117? I suppose it could have come from the periodic table. But I think it's a pretty random number. There's a lot of cases where a company or band will cling to some random three digit number that has no significance whatsoever, but that the fanbase repeatedly tries to draw conclusions about it.

All this being said... way to have Halo on the mind in science class :)

  • 09.23.2011 11:45 AM PDT

Well, until i realized this, i thot the reason for 117 was 1*1*7=7=Bungie's favourite number, which is the reason for the Seventh Column. And wouldnt it kinda make sense if the name Halo came from the halogens since it is the seventh column and they may have had the ringworld idea planted before they thot of an actual name, since a halo is like a giant ring? And as for having Halo on my mind during science class, its kinda hard for me not to cuz i have ADHD so everything runs through my mind at once, and im trying tomake sense of the tech with what i learn in class.

Corn, Oil, and Wine... We need more wine...

The bottom should have Ununoctium. >.>

beat me to it...

  • 09.23.2011 1:23 PM PDT

Ununoctium is 118. And like i said before, the element wasnt discovered yet, they hadnt built one with 117 protons but where it is on the table is where it would always be, we already knew that whether we had ununseptium or not, we would know what is i that spot, number 117... And if somone else goes and says that us not having it proves no relevance, im going to start to think im a genius for seeing this....
