Forum Tutorials --- WATCH THEM AND LEARN

I think a way of getting around the abuse of avatars is just a matter of time. If you give a month or so from when you join, it should be reasonable to let you have your own avatar. Since any spammer usually doesn't stay here for more than a week, it will filter out the abusers. And if you do somehow fined any abusive or offencive avatars, then you can just belete it or PM the person with the avatar to change it.

You know the term "World Peace"? Well it's never going to happen, lol. Just like your idea. If only it were that easy.

Achronos, I wish you would leave us something from the old times.

Clever spammers will take advantage, wait the given time with one profile, then upload an explicit avatar and go on a rampage.

If sig pictures were allowed, the Bungie.net server would explode in a raging conflageration of carnage and death.

UBB and Invision would both suck under the kind of load we have. I don't think you understand the sheer amount of posts we have - since April 12th, we've had almost 70000 posts. Think about that for a little while.

Hmm, well I visit a site (a gaming network to be precise) that uses a modified version of UBB, and at the time of writing, the main forums and 2 of the most popular gaming forums have roughly 3 million posts. Given that it's been around for about 5 years, this averages at about 600 000 posts per year. Extrapolating from your figure of 70 000 in about 5 months gives a figure of aprox 170 000, about 3/10s of that of the forums mentioned above.

So, I'd say that this suggests that UBB, or rather it is possible to modify UBB to handle the large number of posts.

We are working to improve the performance of the forums, but it takes time.
Ok, good to hear, and it's nice to know that Bungie does care :-)

I wish they don't do that. Because, I KNOW some jackass will come here with a -blam!- avatar...*shudders*

Same thing with sig pics, and embedded images. *sigh* I wish the all the users here had a mentality greater then that of a 6 year old child.

But, getting back on-topic; I think there should be a probationary periods for new members. New members would only be allowed to post to threads. After a week, you can start creating threads, after a month or two, you can start posting embedded images, and once the mods see that your a good member of the b.net community, you can get your own avatar. This is just off the top of my head, There can be caps on posts, or threads per day, etc.

Yea i have heard that idea before but it seems like way too much work.

INDEED! Naked Ladies..:)

1 - 5 are on my list too...
4 being the most important...

Almost forgot to mention the 7th Column Council. That would be a brilliant thing to see.

1 thing that i would like to see but is not all that important is Smileys! They would be a nice addition.

Smilies?!?! NEVAR!!!

Smilies are ok in the hands of responsible people...but morons tend to overuse them. Plus they would use a bit of bandwidth..not too much, but I mean there are tens of thousands of users here. They also get in the way of words and makes things hard to read.

I meant only for chapters, where it could be handled by the founder and his minions. If you had the ability to have custom avatars we would most definitely have some jackass putting naked ladies in for his avatar.

Amazing that I have never thought of that. I love that idea though.

No avatars, at least not on the forums. There are some weird people in there.

Okay, no offense to the B.Net team... everything on the site is great, except...

They need an overhaul on their customer support team... I e-mailed a question about 200 hours ago (8.25 days for those who really need to know) and haven't gotten a response...

OF COURSE, they're not the only ones.

The IGN/GameSpy Support Team (might get in trouble for mentioning their name, but oh well... they suck anyways) is still slow as well. Knowing them, HALO 2 will be released before they reply... unless I was an Insider, which I'm not.

P.S. - If anybody up there at bungie, or anybody who has been given access to the Webmaster e-mail account, please look at the e-mail titled "Permission to Use Files?" soon, thanks.

It's Microsoft you need to be -blam!-ing to about that.

  • 09.13.2004 7:33 AM PDT

bah

Well, you probably haven't gotten an answer since they're in the middle of a massive update. They probably got a thousand emails of people saying the Column is down, so they're ignoring them for now. I usually get a responce in under 12 hours when I email them.

P.S. 7th Column Council is not something Bungie will set up. The members of Bungie.net have to organize that themselves. Maybe after such organization occurs, Bungie will impliment some features or something.

No, the council won't be something bungie.net members will setup. It will be and should be something that bungie organizes with the help of the community. Otherwise members of the council just won't have the authority to do what's needed...I mean I talked to sketch in person about this. The council is really going to have to be organized by bungie.

Well... it's about getting permission to use files from Bungie and HALO content in a personally made video of mine... that's why it went to Bungie, and not Microsoft...

I guess I might as well try Microsoft... or just release the vid... my main concern was copyright infringement... Which I probably don't need to worry about anyways...
