Thanks for linking that thread, dazarobbo, this has really helped me out.
Reading Achronos' post in there, I damn near broke my monitor poking angrily at this statement in agreement;
Ideas should not contain things that would require you to modify/patch Halo 3 itself, so don't go there. An example would be how you think fileshares, tagging, or stats could be used in a group related way. Or, what is there now that prevents you from doing things the way you want? How's group discoverability to you? What would you change? We're talking big ideas here, not silly little things about how you want more security roles or colored text or stuff like that. That is not what this discussion is about. Think bigger than that.
We need to think broader, guys. Screw all these ideas about title colors and group fileshares and other trivial and too-specific crap like that for now; It would be cool to have some of the more feasible ideas done, but I can tell you right now that if you were to throw all of those feasible ideas into groups, it would barely accomplish what really needs to get done, which is re-purposing groups to a point where people can really take up lively interest in them again. How to do this? I have no idea, and it's what I've spent months now trying to find ways to facilitate it. (with no results other than a vague final output)
This is my final output right now;
-Groups are easier to find based on various things such as type of forum content, levels of moderation, rank themes, content themes, the type of members who join (main forums and other groups they usually post in? pfft, one can only dream) and maybe even activity levels. The big challenge is that all of these things can change easily, so they might not be good things to go by...
-People are more enthusiastic about the groups they join on the whole because the first statement is true
So let's talk about group discovery.
A very generally vague idea I've had for group discovery is making groups so that people can know what cool and new (or old) groups are out there, easily, without having to actually go out and discover them.
Group discovery...without much work from the user. Is it impossible?
It sure is vague, I know, but I think it's one of the reasons why the classefieds is almost never read, and the private groups spotlight barely achieves this. Though expanding on that feature could bring some better results for my final output.
(I'm sorry if you have no idea what I'm talking about...I sort of don't, either)
