Hard is good.

Note: Customs avatars are an example, not the basis of this thread

Howdy.

I'm an OP for a minecraft server dedicated to the members of bungie.net

I'm not going to spin some huge wall of text to get my point across when it is unequivocally simple and can be brought forth in a concise manner.

If a new command is given to an operator that they have never used before, they will use it and use it again because it is a novelty. (This means shooting random members up into the air over and over again)

However, after about a week the glorious feeling of seeing somebody fly up into the air, only to shoot back down to their inevitable demise, felt a bit dated.

Yet, even though it got a bit dull every now and then somebody would fly up into the sky for whimsical reasons.

This analogy can be drawn to making improvements on the site.

People would abuse it because it is a fancy new option for them, they would use avatars insulting to the eyes and to the mind. However, after a while the hype would tone down and members would start to use the feature sensibly. Every now and then someone would step out of line and then get banned.

TL;DR: New features would be abused, but some of them would be worth adding solely for the long term benefit.

What could this possibly have to do with a minecraft server dedicated to the Bungie communuty?

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

Im confused as well...What are you getting at OP?

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Storm is using it as an example of how new ideas (features) are used frequently, thoroughly, and abused for a short time. Then, once the hype over them dies down and becomes another feature, it's abused far less often and people will use it sensibly.

The psychologist in me agrees.

Edit: Grammar.

I believe he was using an analogy to a Minecraft server to explain why custom avatars should be added but how they would likely be abused at first. I agree with the OP that most of the custom avatar abuse would be at the beginning, however, I don't think it would be too bad as Coup has already proven. Nothing overly vulgar is often used as an avatar, so I don't see why a system for everyone would end any differently.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

If we are talking about new features I agree with what you are saying.

Frankly ANYTHING can be abused on Bungie.net.

-Thread making
-Posting
-signatures
-groups

But, a few "bad eggs" should not discourage us from advancing.

Also, I agree with once those new features are added, people will abuse them for a week then they will get old and slowly but surly integrate perfectly into Bungie.net.

No, we are talking about any idea.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

The problem with this analogy is that it's comparing Ops in Minecraft to regular members of Bungie.net. In order for this to work it would have to compare Ops to Moderators.

Unlike Ops or Moderators, while members on the site may eventually bore of abusing site functions, there's always a fresh supply of members ready to step up and troll and abuse as another member tires with it. This provides and endless supply of people willing to be asshats.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Dish through the tough moments to make it to the other side? I find it does happen, when many ideas (almost anywhere) are involved, and not only on sites like this.

The problem is, whether the initial abuse on an idea implemented is far too great for a site to handle and, in such a case, will it actually be beneficial in the long run?

Yeah but that is everywhere, as long as there is an internet, there will be trolls.

People think becuase they are slightly more anonymous they can do or say whatever they want without consequence.

But, I don't think trolls should prevent us from having nice things.

Actually I think trolls should prevent us from nice things, it's our fault as a society for breeding people who can't behave by social standards even when given the awesome power of anonymity.

But in all honesty, the trolls, flamers, spammers aren't the problem. I'll say it before and I'll say it again, the real problem is with the people who can't ignore it. It's those people who prevent us from having nice things. Not the troll, not the guy flamebaiting, not the pointlessness of spam. We're all responsible for what we can and can't so on this site.

I agree, if we could get 1-2 days without anyone posting in a troll thread of acknowledging the trolls, they would probably leave.

I think more people should "report and move on" than posting report and move on in troll threads and boosting it up.

Are you implying that the ability to randomly shoot players up into the air has a long term benefit to a Minecraft server?

That sounds annoying as hell, and I don't want it on Bungie.net either!

I'm going to invade your heart like a barn swallow high on milk chocolate and grandma love.

Fairness is only possible within the limited powers of man. Elsewhere, there is only chance.

Thus I refute thee.

New features would be abused yes. But it also specifically depends on the new feature. If it just fits the troll mindset, it will be utilized.

Again, there are probably new trolls coming in everyday, not 1 guy doing all of the trolling. So as the new feature gets old for one, it is new for another, and thus the trolling and abusing continues.

I love new features and I don't really care about the result (unless it's an unreasonable feature like being able to change your b.net name) and Ninjas can simply ban anyone who takes things too far.

OPs are hand picked like moderators. Ops can send people in the sky, yet regular members can't. Why did Sam choose that? Because the members could abuse it just like how regular members of Bnet can abuse Custom Avatars and the like.

Ok, let's talk minecraft skins instead.

People want to show off who they are through their skin or have a cool picture.

The occasional person walks around with -blam!-s and they get banned

Minecraft Skins are 16x16 though. The pixels are huge. It's not something that can actually disturb or disgust anyone (or at least, me). Avatars aren't pixelated. They can be anything.
