I was, but your mom left early so I had to cut the trip short.

I'm betting $10 it's that "So you want to work in the video game industry?" video.

EDIT: Yup. Fork it over, Ceylo.

I know you and a lot of other people may have already seen this, but please watch this video first before consider the impossible challenge of creating your own game studio.
The worst thing you could do is waste your grandfather's inheritance because of poor decision-making.

Thanks but this video s almost an insult to me and is something more appropriate for a teenage with his head in the clouds thinking he can make the next big xbox or ps3 game. I am not looking at thins this way.
Yes I am aware of the business side of this and don't think I'm going to make my dream a reality overnight. I will take the time t get the right programmers and piece things together into a stable outline for our project. I already have a building and start up money. I said I am going to start off small with a smartphone game and then if that is successful I can maybe try doing something on the PC and so on.
I'm not saying that I'm trying to immediately dive right into making something for the PS3 or XBOX 360. Bungie started off with jut a handful of people inside a very small studio and they worked their way up just like I plan to.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Two famous quotes come to mind here: A fool and his money are soon parted. And everybody is an "idea man."

You're going to need some practical knowledge -- whether that be business knowledge, programming, or otherwise -- before you should even dream about starting a business venture in one of the most competitive and low-entry-barrier markets in existence. Even some of your posts in this thread are good indicators that you are probably not ready for this. You have no business plan, you have no specific direction, and you're not even certain that you have enough money to sustain your business to the point where it is profitable.

I don't want to step on your dreams here; I'd wager a lot of people here would love to be in game development in some capacity. But I fear that if you want to be at the helm of your own gaming company, you're going to need more than a warehouse and a bit of cash. Study and gain some knowledge before you jump into this headlong.

Major in business.
Minor in comp. programming.

Problem Solved. Everything else Foman mentioned no longer needed.

Warning: Everything else still needed.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Theres risks in everything and I can't allow that to stop me. If I try and fail then at least I tried. But I truly believe my ideas are genuine and if I get the right team together we might be able to create something that catches on with players.
After that it might be easy to get some finding for a new project along with any money we make from our first game.
I already have an empty building that is mine and it will work as a goo make shift studio.

This is a money pit, don't take risks with your money, I know I would be rolling in my grave if I gave my inheritance to one of my children and they blew it all on a dream. If you want to do something with your money, invest it wisely.

There are no original ideas, if you do get a game out, it will be competing against heavy hitter games such as Call of Duty and Gears of War, your game will stand no chance even if it brings something new to the table.

You have to pay for advertising, salaries, health benefits, and pay for your building space. I don't suggest you try to start a game company.

Well, it is the American Dream... but I'd wait for America to start being America until one pursues anything dependent on an adjective as loose as "American".

All counter-arguments to evolution are based on a gross misunderstanding of the theory.

A game studio consists of both a creative, and a business half. Both must be mastered in order to be successful.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

I'd save up that inheritance for something worthwhile. Most gaming companies aren't really successful after their first game or even before their first game.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

Before deciding to start a game studio, you should probably be involved with making a few games at least. If you're in college with extra-curricular groups (Which I assume is like all of them?), there's a decent chance one of those groups wants to make a video game. Go scout out the Computer Science department and see who's doing what.

You need to figure out what you bring to the table, though, besides money. If you can't program or do art, you're in the situation where you want people to make your idea instead of their idea. Figure out why they would do that.

Money doesn't bring good ideas. But good ideas usually need capital. I'd sit on it until you needed it, instead of looking for a way to spend it. Look into game design, if you want. Look into startups, and how to create one. If you can't find talent in your home town, you might need to think about moving to the talent: Austin, Seattle, and the silicon valley area are where many game and tech companies cluster.

Your posts haven't indicated that you aren't just some kid with his head in the clouds. Video games, no matter the platform, are not easy to make. Your risk taking rule may apply to some aspects in life but in the business world (the video game industry) it doesn't mean a thing; if you continue to pursue your "dream" then you will learn this reality the hard way. I honestly can't believe that you could be alright with possibly failing and blowing your grandfather's money in the water. I strongly suggest you rethink what you will do with your money.

I highly doubt that they will come and comment here. Even though they are very awesome people they have been known to be a tiny bit greedy. They probably would see you as a mere threat to the 7 steps.

lol I would be flattered if Bungie thought I was a threat.
mere threat.

First off, make the business legitimate. Go down to your county clerks office and put in for a fictitious business name.
Second get a business license for the city where your business is located.
Assuming your just the investor/business owner, you'll need at least four people. (You can assume any of these roles if you see fit..)
1.) Business Manager/Bookkeeper
2.) Producer/Developer
3.) Artist/3D Modeler/Audio Engineer
4.) Programmer
5.) A hottie working the front desk.

As for hardware, they will all need computers, I would recommend all Apple computers. (Apple has the largest share of "smart phones") They will all need a workplace in your building. You will also need to section off an area of your building for a conference or meeting room.

Just like where in a rock band the drummer is key to the success of the band, the programmer is key to the success of your game. Find the best programmer, a decent artist, and a good producer. You should assume the roll of the business manager.

To help facilitate your project, I would recommend checking out getmoai.com. It was used to build Crimson.

And remember be a sponge, learn everything you can.

Last piece of advice. All the millionaires I know are stingy, penny pinching scrooges. If you want to be one of them, make every cent count.

Hope this helps.

I just got a large inheritance from my grandpa and before he died he told me to "do something successful" with it so I'm going to do what I've always wanted and start up a gaming studio.
I already have a small empty building now all I need is just equipment and designers/programmers.
I'm not a programmer myself but I have big ideas and just need the right foundation to get started. I'd like to start off with making a game for smart phones then PC and hopefully something for xbox.
So if the community or Bungie has any advice for me I'd much appreciate it.
