Subject: Why Was Halo 3's Story a Failure For You?

T4R

A lot of people say that Halo 3's story didn't quite do it for them, so I'm exploring the vast ocean of opinions.

In my opinion, Halo 3 greatly rivals that of Halo 2's epicness in terms of its story. I felt so involved while playing the game, and I felt the story was so rich and full of immersion.

I like the fact that the entirety of Halo 3's story was made into a full game since it was just originally the last quarter of Halo 2, but due to time constraints, it had to be cut. I really like how Bungie handled it.

I don't let the fact that it's the last half of the second game extended hinder my views. I look at it for what it is, and I say it's a tight story.
Don't focus on the trivial aspects regarding things that don't even matter or pertain outside of the actual story (such as "drawing out" the first half of the game due to cuts in the Halo 2). Look at it as if it were its own fresh story.

What are your thoughts on Halo 3's story? What exactly do you think it could have done better?

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

I liked Reach's better because there was a sense of urgency. I can't explain it, but something about felt...incomplete.

Oh yeah, I felt that too playing Reach. I get that feeling from your allies dwindling and the desperation becoming prevalent more and more as the game goes on.

That's something most Halo games had; You'd start off with an organized, full force, but by the end of the game, it's crippled and barely able to do anything.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I liked it, but it's not among my favorites.

Personally, I really liked the Halo 3 campaign. The only part where I felt it was lacking was the alliance between the Sangheili and the Humans just sort of coming up without much of an explanation. Aside from that, I thought it was great all around.

Show Faith/Defy Fate

Although H3 has the best campaign gameplay wise, IMO, I agree that it lacked the story that Halo CE and 2 had in their campaigns. The first half of Halo 1 seemed like filler and its just you taking orders. It felt linear to me even though it was really fun!I think Tsavo HW is one of my favorite warthog levels in the series! And I like ODSTs nod to Tsavo HW with Dutch's mission.

But dont even get me started on Reach's campaign. The story was there, but the characters never showed up to carry it!I wouldnt call H3's story a failure. It just wasnt as in depth as the other games.

H3=Get to Earth, follow Truth, stop him, activate the ring and stop the flood once and for all.

Halo Reach=Investigate disturbance, engage and repel covenant, fight until no one is left standing. Oh, and dont include any elements of the book! That takes priority over everything, son.

Halo reach alone on legendary! Message me to play halo wars, too. im the only person here who likes halo wars.

I loved halo 3's epic ending. I just didnt think the story was too strong anywhere else in halo 3.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

Not ignoring the Arbiter's side of things and showing more of his intentions and feelings and how they changed. All we can really do just now is assume things about him.

Exploring the relations between Humanity and the Elites more. Rtas and Hood are surely not the only points of view in this war. And actually show more of this "alliance", because all it really felt to me was the UNSC with a few Sangheili here and there. It didn't really feel like the Sangheili were going all in to prevent the array going off and wiping out their entire species. We didn't see very much of them.

Rather than having the player trek through desolate highways and abandoned warehouses, have them travel through cities and towns so that the actual Human cost of the war could be seen, and so that the player has a reason to care about Earth's safety. Ultimately though, spending less time on Earth and more time on the Ark. We had that huge environment and we saw almost none of it.

Get rid of Miranda Keyes.

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

Halo 3's campaign was one of my favourite. The bad things about it was the first and second level.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

There was no real climax to it, and it didn't keep up the arc well.

Think of the trilogy in three act structure, exposition (CE), conflict (2), resolution (3). When you split the whole three act structure into three installments you ultimately make it a nine act structure, because each one should be broken into three. Halo three had this, however there was no real climax to Halo 3. The action and excitement had stayed fairly flat throughout it.

As well, its resolution of events was somewhat disappointing.

I enjoyed Halo 3's story. My only 'criticism' if you could call it that, was that it didn't seem as desperate as it could have been. Humanity was on it's last legs and defending Earth, but no one seemed to mention that.

The Covenant level wasn't enough of a climax?

Never take life seriously. No one gets out alive anyway.

I think you have to read all the books to fully understand it, and even then it's still incomplete.

The story of Halo is vast and the complete end of it won't come for a while. I enjoyed the Halo 3 story but I think I like Reach a little better.

And I know that I might get flamed for this but I really enjoyed Halo 3: ODST's story, even how short it was.

ODST was a great game, introduced a new character to the game, one alot lower on the food chain than the Master Chief. That brought in a whole new perspective on the war, we got to see it from the eyes of someone who was able to experience life before training.

The Ark should have been on Earth.

Entirety of the game should have been on Earth.

the game was a fail for me

The Covenant level wasn't enough of a climax?

The fact that the climax is arguable shows you that there was no definitive climax. Some believe it is Cortana, others might think Halo, and Covenant and so on.

None of them gave a climactic conflict, because all the levels, even though they attempted to be veery grand in scale, were still fairly confined experiences.

  • 09.25.2011 4:28 PM PDT

There should have been more levels on the Ark. I also felt that the alliance was not focused on enough. I think there was only one level where humans and Sangheili fought side by side, The Covenant. The whole Ark campaign should have been an integrated coalition INCLUDING even some Separatist Unggoy and Malekgolo to make things interesting as far as interaction with the humans fighting alongside.

All in all, I felt Halo 3 was just too damn short for me. I finished it in one afternoon into the evening.

I am a monument to all your good deeds.

I loved the campaign a lot but like most people i hated the second to last mission it was hard and boring just going through a maze and killing flood after flood and getting lost.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

I liked Halo 3's campaign better than Halo 2's because the plot was more solid.
