NOTE- I posted this before and got basically no feedback, (one troll), a couple guys told me to post it here so:
*Here it is*

So I need to understand something. Elite Promotions!
Exactly how does an elite enter the "army", and how does he gain rank (do not quote this line!!! 030 )?

Heres what I've picked up, filled in the blanks, and guessed on.

If Elite armys are anything like Earth's a young elite probably enters the army at some age or another, then goes through a "boot camp" of sorts. This is intuition. Reasoning?

The likelyhood of new elites simply given expensive weapons and command over lesser species seems a little far-fetched. Most descriptions of elite minors I've read usually state that they are a low ranked group, but still have considerable skill. So elites probably learn weapon-combat training for some time before given energy shielding, a gun, and grenades.

After training they gain the rank of minor. From their most would think its simply a step up to major. But I think something a bit different. Instead of going up to major, they probably have a choice between two other alterntives: Spec ops and Ranger.

My reasoning for this is if an elite has enough weapon training and experience to become a major, why just go their? If they are responsible (woooah this is getting really, really creepy), and good with stealth tactics and prescicion weapons, wouldnt spec ops be a good choice?

Or rangers, (who seem to lack any kind of leader: Ultra, Zealot, General, ect.) probably have their own course for testing combat skills in zero-gravity situations and using different armor.

After major if showing enough leadership and strength they are promoted to ultra ranks. Although I suppose spec ops ultra (from the original trilogy) may be an alternitive if they were simply spec ops. Ultra's are formidable opponents and often command a major or, (as I saw once), two minors and a major.

The ultras are most likely violent or suspicious of other ultras as you almost never see two ultras fighting together (in halo reach). Ultras also don more powerful energy shielding and armor which leads to the probability that they are well-trusted soldiers.

Wow, about 2,000 words down! If you've read this from beggining I commend you! If not, go back to the top >.>

At ultra rank if you show dignity, strength and a good figure you might have a spot on the honor guard ranks ahead!
They get big thunder sticks (Bow-Chicka-Bow-wow!)
Honor guards need skill (to take out those who know to much...) But they also need to look strong and fierce! Like most real life honor guard systems (minus the fierce. Unless you're British!) (JK)

But if you dont want that, theirs always the next step up:
Zealot.

Zealots are feared, they are strong, and their are few of them. (More honor guards have been seen then Zealots)
Also they need considerable melee weapon skills as they are one of the few ranks entrusted with the ultimate sangheii weapon: The energy sword.

Zealots often command large squads of lesser species, (and occasionally other Zealots and elites) They are fierce but not stupid enough to go alone. (Zealots have been witnessed copperating with other Zealots. And if not they always got other covvy species.)

From their, you have only one way to go. UP! (Unles you are executed... Roflcopters) Oddly, the Sangheili general is deployed more then Zealots, yet have more weapon skills. I have no explanation for that >.> <.<

We simply do not know enough about the general to make a good paragraph about him. You see more of the Field Marshall then them(In cutscenes). They enjoy powerfull weapons and are skilled enough to use an energy sword. Thats all I know.

I dont know much about the councilor's battle skills or influence upon other sangheili but judging from the name and armor they have SOME political influence upon elite culture.

After General, your career is pretty much set (Unless noble six snipes you. Oh well, no one really cares 030 ) But very few go up a rank to FIELD MARSHALL! Their armor is more ornate and somewhat practical (its basically zealot armor trimmed and ornamented yadada...) Only one is seen canonically which implies much influence and skill is required for this rank. They carry big weapons and big swords. Several Zealots help them, showing even more rank and influence. They are THE Sangheili.

~Notice~
The arbiter rank was a title of great honor, but things shifted and it actually became a disgrace to those give it. I simply am to tired to wright about them.

The Sangheili are a mysterious species and it would be a great suprise and delight to see some of their culture in Halo 4.
(although Im pretty sure we wont... >.< )

Post please, corrections and any updates or info I missed are appreciated.

and "pro" is a term used for people who make money at what they do like a professional baseball player like albert pujols

i <3 science cookies

I'm almost positive that ranks are based on the entire covenant not just by species. The entire covenant is very religious. Zealots are the religious seekers looking for any forerunner artifacts. They are very secretive and do their work very exclusive.

You are right, but I was trying to piece together how one particular covenant species gained rank.

Seems legit except I read somewhere (and judging from the structural formations and patterns of recruitment in religion-based governmental societies) that elites are most likely drafted into war as children(like israel) where they are trained as children(like israel) to soldiers. And considering the large number of "male" elites(like primitive tribes), Elites most likely base their draft as a male only requirement.

So i would assume all elites grow up learning basic combat, and are based on a male-only warrior army system.

I didnt know if thats what you meant from earlier before, but that's just me probably repeating your words.

Half Man.
Half Horse.
Half Machine.
All "Jerk Who's Really Bad at Math."

PS
No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

I'm thinking Elites began their combat training very early in their childhood, most likely by their fathers or next-closest male relative shortly after they learn to walk on their own.

While a human toddler is still playing with toys, male elites would be just beginning their combat training and physical conditioning. When a young human of six or so is learning how to swing a bat and hit a ball, an elite of the same age is learning how to fight with an energy sword.

They would probably enter the actual military around age 12 or 13, do some basic training to learn teamwork and how to use various types of plasma-based weaponry. For the first few years, young elites would probably be given relatively "easy" missions against low-threat targets to hone their skills and reflexes.

I believe promotions from one rank to another is based on kills and combat prowess; leadership or simply being a "good soldier" and following orders isn't nearly enough.

They are a warrior society and I think a lot of how their culture/military operates is patterned after the samurai of feudal Japan.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

It mostly depends on the social level the Elite's clan is currently at. If the Elite is an aristocrat, then he will most likely become a ship master and/or sword wielder.

All Elite fall into the Covenant Military at some point in their lifes. They train their whole childhood to become proficient, lethal killers and keen strategists. (Especially on the small scale level)

The Halo 2 Manual states that the UNSC believes that Elite's rank up depending on the level of casualties they inflict on their enemies. So when you see a high ranking Elite, you know he means business and is definitely not a push over.

I think it's an aristocratic society; Sangheili are born into positions of power, with few working their way up the rank and file.

Like the British army in the 1800s, for example.

*reminisces on Sharpe.*

Well I meant that they are probably taught to use weapons as a child. Actual army age might be 12-14 (someone else said it so thanks).

And elite aristocrats DO get great advantages, although I'm sure that even a socialy low-ranking elite can gain a certain level of respect in the army. (Id guess to like Ultra). Zealot, honor guard and up probably have to start out a good social rank.

Anyways thanks for posting!

Zealot is the highest class, and it's made up of multiple sub-ranks so to speak. Like Field Marshals, Fleet Masters, Ship Masters, and at least a couple more ranks (general most likely falls in here) make up the larger rank of Zealot.

Highest position an Elite can have though is Honor Guard, though that's not really a real rank, Honor Guards are the best of the best from amongst the Sangheili.

And the Elites are trained to fight pretty much from birth, they all have very harsh child-hoods. I believe the comic Bloodlines goes into at least some detail on the training Elites go through throughout their lives. I do know that their training is brutal enough that a good chunk of the trainees die in it.
