Subject: What exactly is the max life span that the Sangheili have?

How many years would a Sangehili live up to? (leaving out premature deaths and possible diseases)

Would they live over a few centuries? We have yet to know how long they could possibly live.

We don't know. Thel is 68 and still pretty athletic if that is any indicator.

I would probably guess that's a fraction before mid-age...

How do we know he's 68?

Because we have been given his date of birth.

The Visual guide. It gives his birthdate. The age I gave is his age in 2552.

They are stated to reproduce more slowly than humans, I don't think it's a stretch to think that they live somewhat longer as well.

Oh, okay cool. I need to get that guide, I have a strong feeling I am missing so much from it.

Oops. I think I just lost your mind.

Yes, but remember that compared to John's date of birth he is like 41. He has only aged 28 years because of cryosleep; presumably there would be some comparable effect if the covenant used similar technology (do we know if they do? their ships, with all their wide open spaces, don't really seem to have the infrastructure to support their crew sizes on a long trip, even considering their faster travel times. We know they use suspended animation in their drop-pods, so it's conceivable the Covenant use it in ships.)

Source for that please. Considering an official canon source (Bloodlines comic) pretty much states they are egglayers suggests that, if anything, their reproduction rate is more rapid, but countered by their 'survival of the strongest/fittest' belief.

One of the novels, they mention the breeding rate of humans is much higher, which is why the Elites called them (some sort of alien animal) which translates roughly to "monkey"

I'm not going to read 4 novels to find the quote but I'm pretty sure I'm not making it up, anyone want to back me up?

Break down, every single one of you.

That is an interesting question. I don't believe that has ever been brought up before.

So that must mean that military personnel tend to live longer than civilians (excluding death by warfare) I wonder if this affects the human society at all.

They have females. They aren't ase[x]ual.

  • 09.26.2011 10:41 PM PDT

My theory is they live anywhere between 2-2.5 times longer than humans do on average.

  • 09.26.2011 11:22 PM PDT

I'm guessing in the late 100s to the early 200s.

Having read two of the three books (full-length) that have Sangheili PoV (The Flood and Cole Protocol), I don't remember something like that being in there, and I am usually pretty good at remembering such details (though I did miss the tongue reference in CP). Of course it could be in GoO, which I just can't get myself into reading fully.

As I said, other evidence suggests to me that the birth rate for Sangheili is higher, but yet have higher infant morality rate due to their society's beliefs. I suspect the ratio between males and females may be different as well, though not sure which way yet.

@mojeda
I know they are not ase xual: where the heck did you get that I said otherwise?

It was mentioned in The Cole Protocol on page 141.

Twenty Unggoy filled the large, open space of the hanger bay. The Unggoy, like the Humans, were short, bred too fast, and were individually weak.
I do sort of agree with you though, it makes little sense for them to have a lower birth rate. Perhaps Thel does not realize that the difference in population is down to the Sangheili carrying out infanticidal eugenics. Although if they do live longer than Humans then they will have a longer life cycle, which may mean a lower birth rate.

Indeed...especially if you take into consideration other factors. Such as, the chaotic (dangerous) weather environments they live on due to all the celestral bodies around their planet and their own war-like culture. It just makes more logical sense that they have a higher birth rate which is not reflected in actual population numbers due to all those factors.

In terms of age, I haven't a clue how long they live. I believe I can safely guess one thing though: the females tend to live longer since they are not the ones going out fighting. After all, warriors tend to have shorter average life spans....
