It's nice to know that i'm not alone b/c i like some sci-fi. my dad kinda got me into it.. he watched all sorts of old sci-fi... Lost in Space, The Blob (which I have yet to see anything of)...

Battlestar Galatica rocks!

It's cool to see what inspires the guys at Bungie.

Hey Dan Miller! Mega Ditto's from Lynden!

I'm kinda suprised that none of the Bungie crew mentioned( not listed as a favorite) the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin.

I can't believe that none of you said Star Trek! Especially in light of the Star Trek 2.0 premiere on G4!

But, in all truth, I still can't believe that Star Wars was mentioned either... But seriously, Spock could whoop Vader's ass...

Wow....what a variety...not suprising though! I would have to say that any good artist's inspiration comes from multiple sources! Off subject, the the world that the ring/ Halo is orbiting around seems unfamiliar. I know that in Halo, installation 04 was orbiting around that bright orange planet, basis....But was Delta halo orbiting around a planet like the one in the this week's update pic? I can't remember...seems different somehow......

That's what I want to know. I'm a fan of all three, as you can see from my extremely dorky username. Yay for obscure sci-fi references!

I'm proud that someone mentioned Primer. I love that movie.

this bungie guide to sci fi is a lil dull. i mean: do they not know what good sci fi is? i only glanced at the actual commentary so i apologize if it is better then the list of "winners" they put up there. the lists are horrible. especially the video games. they put such an big hype on blade runner that they failed to realize blade runner is an old movie that is slow paced and boring. the futuristic part is good yes but as a whole its not that good of a movie. the video game section is down right horrible and i dont want to even begin on that cuz its ridiculous. the book section is alright. i dont read much but i know dune is the best choice. tv shows? ehhhhhh. firefly defintely not. but the movies. i mean give me a break. and the designs of the marines for halo is a direct....not a slight....but a direct ripoff of the marines from aliens and starship troopers. so bungie, get your -blam!- together....cuz obviously you suck

Great article and great food for thought.

One question, though:

Why no list from Jason Jones or Joe Staten?

Stargate is B-Grade scifi at best. I'd put it a little below Sliders and Seaquest DSV. And it's not even B-grade to the point where it makes fun of itself, like Xena. Just sorta bad tv, in addition to bad scifi. It's where Star Trek nerds go to die. (Star Trek nerds who followed the franchise after the first couple seasons of DS9 anyway.)

I'm glad someone else in the world has seen Primer. Realistic sci-fi (without aliens symbiote worms, portals, and Richard Dean Anderson) is how it should be done. Let us feel connected with a familiar world, THEN throw in the crazy scifi stuff.

Whether the bungie crew knows that the term "Architect" is a phrase protected by law is beyond me. For all i know they'll all be arrested tomorrow for claiming that some are architects, hehe. I don't know what I'm talkin about; don't mind me.

Seriously... you have to be kidding me. Slow pacing does not make a movie bad. In fact, in my opinion a major flaw of many recent films, not just science fiction films, is a lack of any sense of pacing. Every sequence is edited like an action sequence, thus rendering the purpose of an action scene meaningless. The second and third matrix films suffered from this. If you think Blade Runner was boring, you just weren't paying attention.

You should read more. Many of the books listed in the article are classics. The original Dune is a great novel, but as you don't seem to have read it, you're missing out.

A science fiction world, in my opinion, can be as ludicrous as it wants to be as long as it provides 1) a decent explanation or 2) solid, likeable characters. If the writers can manage to do both, then I say go crazy.

Also, MacGyver.

My inner nerd will forgive you, though, because you like Primer. :) I gave the movie to my family and they fell asleep halfway through. These are sad times.

"Rules build up fortifications behind which small minds create satrapies. A perilous state of affairs in the best of times, disastrous during crises."

It's that tee vee stuff, it does things to your brains. Strange things.

No seriously. The compact 30 minute episodes of everything practically forces your attention span to decrease.

[There's even talk of making shows shorter because some people feel 30 minutes per show is too long.]

You guys left off Babylon 5 practically, and Lexx. I can see you leaving off all the side projects which evolved from the Babylon 5 series movies, and other series. But seriously one Babylon 5 mention, what gives? Oh yeah 'War of the World's' with Tm Cruise sucks!
