First of all, EA is a publisher, not a developer; EA is to Criterion as Microsoft is to Bungie.
Secondly, Criterion has done a superb job of creating an exciting, gorgeous, addictive racing game. Which means even more coming from someone who absolutely loathes racing games. At this point, it is my opinion that Burnout 3 should have an edge over Fable, and while all I can really do is speculate, (as Fable's street date is still three days off) Burnout 3 has done more to distinguish itself in its genre as well as breaking across additional genres and predetermined guidelines. It seems to me that Fable will take a tried and true recipe and conservatively expand on certain aspects. I don't doubt Fable is a great game, and I hope it is as I've already bought it, I just don't see it earning, well, at least deserving GOTY.
No, I'm not a Burnout 3 fan boy and no, I'm not a Fable hater (as I've already mentioned I've preordered it and am actually pretty excited about its pending release), I'm simply giving credit where credit's deserved.
Long story short, Burnout 3 is a great game. With any luck Fable will be too. It's my opinion, at this point and time that Burnout 3 should have a better chance against Halo 2 as a GOTY contender.
On a side note, Burnout 2 is certainly worth the $20 bucks, provided you can find it.
Edit: It seems TODD beat me to the Developer versus Publisher issue...
