Also, go into your Program Files in you computer and make sure you don't see weird folders (like "Free Coupons" or something).

But I like my coupons...

Adware, most likely.

You might like to scan your computer using a program called Spybot Search&Destroy, which you can download for free from here. I know the site looks a bit dodgey but it's safe. Use that to scan for and remove any spyware from your computer. If you read the overview here you'll see it's exactly what you need :)

I also recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as a free antivirus program for anybody who has a valid copy of Windows.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

Exactly what I was going to say. I would tell you how to turn it off, but I don't know how to, so you're on your own.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I've personally been in love with the Malwarebytes scanner since it got me out of a big jam at work a few years ago. IMO (and according to the security guy I was talking to), it doesn't get any better.

Agreed on MSE, though. The settings let you tell it to act in a way that won't get in your way, which is more than I can say for any other anti-virus I've used.

To the OP: I agree with everyone else here -- intentionally or not, you downloaded something that acts like malware. Could be connected to one of the toolbars, or it might be more hidden than that.

CrapCleaner would probably clean it out for you as long as it isn't being too aggressive about sticking around. CCleaner also helps your machine stay in good shape by clearing out stuff you just don't need any more.

I was a finalist :P

I personally think I have malicious content as well. Every now and then, when I open a new tab, it redirects me to advertisement site. I have to restart my browser every time this happens (Trend Micro didn't pick it up). I am now going to download the recommended .exe put forward by Jumbus- hopefully it works.

Nevermind, after a re-scan, Trend had detected something malicious, I guess I should scan a lot more often.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I think my computer has a worm...

I guess it is just like that learn more thing that comes up when I highlight something and hover over it. Just a lot less subtle and in your face.

OP, go to your control panel, then either "Add or Remove Programs" or "Programs and Features" depending on which version of Windows you have, and look for AdText, TopText, HotText, TextEnhance, or Hyperlinker. Remove them if they're listed.

If that's the case, they probably got installed the same way your toolbars did. Some company included it with their installer package, and you ran right by a check box that you should've cleared during the install process.

IE is a death trap, that just proves it...
All that proves is that you're a dunce when it comes to browsing the internet. If you actually checked what you were downloading you wouldn't get so much spyware/malware.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

It really surprises me how many people even now still end up downloading spy/ad/malware. Peopple really should be forced to study and pass an examine before being let out onto the internet.

What a hipster.

Yeah... When I see a link that's out of the ordinary, my first response is to not click it.

Do you have any anti-virus programs for your computer?
