I browse a few other forums from time to time, and I've noticed they all have the option to
specify your reason for editing a post.

I think this would be a great addition to the forum. A lot of the time the "Edited On :(Insert Time Here)" mark is a big eyesore on a thread when you made a small mistake.

So instead of that ugly scar, let's replace it with a smaller, maybe italicized, text of the user. And if a user chooses not to give a reason, the default time-stamp will take its place.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I wouldn't like this. I'm a lazy guy of sorts, and I don't really want to type in a reason everytime I want to edit a post.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

They should just move the edit text down next to the original timestamp.

So if someone didn't give a reason for their edit, there is no evidence of an edit? Do not like.

Pretty much, I never leave a reason for my edits in the Waypoint gamma forums.

I never said that. If someone doesn't care to give a reason, no big deal. The default time stamp will be in its place.

Exactly.

Original post: "I dont like bloom. It ruins matchmaking."

Edited post: "I don't like bloom. It ruins matchmaking."

Reason for adding apostrophe: "I added an apostrophe to the word 'don't' so that it would look correct grammatically."

See what I mean?

First of all, you people are missing the point.

I'm not saying we should introduce this just to make the threads look better. It actually serves a purpose. Just because I only talked about appearance in the OP, doesn't mean it's the only possible purpose. Quit being so simple.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Why would you use this for minor uses? The OP said you can not put a reason. If it's minor, you don't need to put a reason.
Plus if the text is in a different format, then people would know what would be the included edit information and they could choose to read or not to.

I can see this being useful for long OP's that have been updated.

If you don't need to put a reason, then why should it matter?

I am a Floodian

When I've been on other websites, I've rarely, if ever used that feature.

That isn't a reason to not have it, but I don't think it would be a commonly used feature.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

No. I like the Edited on :(time) system, although, yes, I think it should be much much smaller.

  • 09.29.2011 4:45 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

The edit time stamp should just replace the original time stamp, or at least be placed under it in the same font. As for edit reasons, if I feel the need to place a reason for my edits (if it's a major edit), I already do that on my own. I don't need an extra field to help me with that nor should anyone else if they really want to explain what they edited.

I understand it'd be optional, but it's still just added fluff to the forums that doesn't really offer any real functionality that couldn't be covered by the user themselves. And with the same convenience.

I agree that the current "Edit" notification is obnoxious and ugly, but I don't think adding a reason for your edit is a good idea. I know I don't feel like filling that out anytime I need to edit something... If I really care enough to let people know what my edit was for, then I'll just add "Edit-*insert reason here*" at the bottom of my post.

This sort of thing should not be enforced, but rather seen as a sort of courtesy. I believe everyone should automatically do this as a gesture of kindness to the reader, so that people can understand him clearer.

If you would make people type an explanation in on the other hand, that's demeaning and is like telling someone to "explain yourself!" Oftentimes, people lie in those circumstances. Sad, I know, but true.
