When it first came out, the people who had it actually showed that they knew a tad bit more about using the internet than the average user does. Those people also knew how to make non-horrific looking coups as well since they would use colored title bars and non-animated avatars.

Today's coups consists of animated .gif avatars that normally have to do with some annoying overused meme or MLP and they have overly-flashy title bars. This is why I stopped using it 2 years ago. It seems like everyone and their grandmother on The Flood use it now.

In short it positively affected the community when it was underground and it became negative once it went semi-mainstream.

I use coup, but I can certainly see what you're saying; the animated avatars and title bars are annoying and some of the color choices look like a box of crayons threw up. Background images for individual posts are horrid as well but I keep those disabled. More and more I think about using the option to not load anyone coup but my own to keep my eyes from bleeding.

I don't think it's really affected the community as a whole too much; I think there are more people who don't use it or don't know about it than those who do. It's not an essential for the site by any means and I don't usually see people telling others that "you absolutely have to have this!"

There are many members whom have created beautiful backgrounds that more than make up for the bad ones. hell, without backgrounds mine probably looks completely blank.

Learn to accept people interest.

It has harmed but also help the community in my opinion. The places where it has harm is B.net members are bias toward people that have a coup that shows of their interest. Not everybody like that interest. Those user might get (Hate mail) or topic posted about hating their interest.

It is slowly helping the b.net community to adapt and learn to respect other people interest.

The initial coup was something worth exploring, however the current is just harmful.

Please elaborate on how it's harmful?

It's often used as a common excuse to deter developments as far as user avatars or color modifications are concerned. The userbase has also somewhat shifted, and while I have been out of it, I noticed that upon its conception coup d' bungie was focused on innovation and new developments, while the last time I joined I was met with regulation and general ignorance.

ooga booga boooh

I've been using coup for a long time. I never really took full advantage, I just liked to see how people customized their profiles. It's pretty awesome. I don't think it has made a life changing impact here to B.net, but I do think those who use it love the guys and gals who make it, update it, and maintain it.

If you don't have coup, get it! It's fun just to see what other people are doing.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I don't really see it. Can you explain further?

With a community this big I don't think any niche hobby could affect the "community at large", but I think there are a few things that have been affected. First, that original coup script exploded into a community of coders that seems to be still active; I'm sure that the existence of that sub-community has affected those people in some way above and beyond the sheer existence of the scripts themselves. (i.e, "some people probably made some friends")

Second, the coup script reignited and drew attention to the whole coding "scene" here at bnet; tools like the unicode stripper and the bungie.me stats might not exist if those people hadn't been drawn in by simple greasemonkey coding.

Probably the easiest one: I've noticed a huge decrease in the amount of "Can I get a custom avatar" threads over the past couple of years, and this might have had something to do with it.

Finally, we now have a rather large group of people already gathered if they decide they want more user-made themes and such, which might help out in the future.

Who knows if it has "affected our path", though: We don't even know what path we're on right now.

Edit: I almost forgot -- the scripts have now added a new layer to troubleshooting, since no one ever remembers to turn off the scripts before complaining about something being broken. So there's that.

I feel like coup has equally affected the community, both positively and negatively. The positive affects of coup are that people are given the option to express their individuality more freely. With the limited amount of avatars we are given people may feel as if they cannot be as original as they would like.

Personally, I enjoy customizing my avatar, as well as my title bar. I no longer use coup, but I when I did I felt in control; not to say that I had no control over what I was doing, but more to say that I liked the feeling of being able to choose what I wanted to be. I could have a title bar with bananas in it, and an avatar with oranges.

In other words, I like how people are given the freedom to manifest themselves in their avatars, as well as their title bars. Not only that, but there are several other beneficial settings that come along with coup. Sure, there are limits, but overall people have an overwhelming amount of dispensation.

Although coup does have it's ups, there are a few things about coup which I believe have negatively affected this community. A small fault in coup, and I am sure this was not intended upon its creation, is that there are an overwhelming number of topics regarding it, which, by the rules, are not allowed.

As I said, I am sure this was not intended. After all, before creating something you are never sure of whether or not it will be accepted, and what portion of it will, or will not be accepted. So that is not a huge issue, but it certainly has lead to several off topic discussions, as well as rule breaking.

Perhaps another negative affect that we should address is the abilities we are given. We can completely alter who we are. That is, as I said before, quite brilliant, but in some cases, not so much e.g. someone might alter their personality completely. By that I mean that someone might pose as someone else. I have not used coup in quite sometime, so I am unsure if people are able to do that anymore, but in the beginning (if I remember correctly) you were able to.

The negative affects that has on the community is that it might create a stir up, people will get angry at one another, and rules will be broken. If someone is using coup and convinced that someone else is a moderator when they really aren't, all hell could break lose. Not literally, of course, but you understand what I am saying. People may impersonate someone else, thus resulting in a chaotic feud.

In essence, coup has helped members express who they are more freely, although that freedom is sometimes taken for granted.
