I'm just here to check the meters.

For the upcoming game that is? Do you think they're creating one from scratch?

Definitely their own... Why would they steal someone else's?
They'll probably stick with the Havok-Bink setup.

A Hemi V8. jk.

Probably their own as usual. It has to suit the needs of what they want to accomplish which means custom built.

Now If they were to choose an existing engine by another developer ( which they wouldn't ) but if they did I would say ID tech 5 looks pretty sexy and powerful, especially if their next game is featuring large scale environments. ( which it will )

I'd love the frostbite engine to be used, alas I doubt that will ever be the case...

I don't know. I'm lovin' the BF3 beta but I've never seen anything so buggy this close to launch...

Le Captein wouldn't tell me what he left on that UFO, i know what i left, my rifle, but i'm still in deep thought about why the UFO exploded...

It would be awesome if they used Frostbite or Steam, they are my two fav engines, but i doubt that they would be used, i'd much prefer it if they made their own as well.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

Like everyone said, they create their own engine. In fact, I know someone at Bungie who has specifically been working on that engine for a few years now.

But to add something to this, they also typically license the Havok engine as well for their physics engine. They've done it since Halo 2, so I imagine they would continue to do it.

Yeah it would probably be a mix of their own and a licensed engine.

Es ist Zeit für einige Gefahr-pay

I remember seeing something about an engine in development elsewhere in which the polygons are more like atoms so everything has depth to it. Even the ground has it and is not just some backdrop-like thing.

That would be awesome to see.

Edit: Found it. Click to view awesomeness.

It will probably not surpass any of those when it comes to technical prowess but considering that the engine is being custom designed to handle their computing/graphical needs it will be superior in function.

That, or the Reach engine.

Most developers including bungie run off of a modified game engine, Then they ad certain properties to it like physics and particle effects as well as lighting. and what not, The call of duty franchise (even the newest one) runs off of a HEAVILY modified Quake 3 engine (which is very old). Valve still to this day uses their source engine, which was first being developed near the time of the quake 3 engine was launched. Most likely they will run off of of the same stuff they've been working with in the past. But will further ad to it (like they did with reach) Which essentially creates a new build. Don't know every detail but that should explain the basics.

Still crazy though how games have jumped from a couple hundred polygons (which resembled a regular person a robot) to thousands of polygons. in art direction most developers are Now aiming towards a more "hand crafted" feel (that's the terms most people say now). This is good because now for developers for they no longer are as limited (especially as developers tools are becoming more easier and easier to use) with the exception by their imagination and Creativity. Which has, in my opinion been the actual problems with most games now. Creativity . But that isn't new news, mmkay? got all of that?
