Subject: Why do we need the profanity filter?

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

Anyone with a brain can easily bypass it, and it's not like you need to use profanity to insult someone.

Edit: Profanity would only be a problem for de-railing threads, trolling, flaming, and spamming. All of those acts are bannable and would be reported, and thus, banned.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

So you promote such childish language?

You can express emotion without swearing, you child.

Yeah... the f word is so childish. That makes sense. Way to insult someone over their opinion too. I like how you did that. That wasn't childish at all. Oh...wait...

Again, childish. You seem to be very hypocritical in that you call people childish for using swear words to display emotion, and yet at the same time you act almost entirely based on the emotional and mental scale of a 5 year old. Interesting.

Stop trying to sound smarter than you actually are.

I certainly don't have the logic of a five year old. The fact you're fighting to get a profanity filter removed is hilarious. If the filter was removed, and the immature imaginations of the Bungie.net community unrestrained and loose, and we'd all be posting stuff like this.

Furry At Heart,
Furry Forever óÓÒò

Supreme mastery therefore, is not to be victorious in all your battles; supreme excellence is to be victorious without fighting.

"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies. "

I think it should stay because many people here use vulgar language with great intensity.

Excessive use of swearing does nothing to increase the validity of discussions, only immature bickering and hostility. And since the forums on this site is based around discussion, an effort to keep that discussion civil in vocabulary is quite amiable.

As you say, it can be bypassed without difficulty, but I choose not to do so because I have no need to use such language. I can fully articulate my intent without using base vocabulary.

The only time I the profanity filter annoys me is when it removes a word integral to the discussion.

For example, "How you you feel about -blam!-?"

No one will have any idea what the -blam!- was before it got filtered, thus rendering the thread pointless. But that does not justify the complete removal of the feature. At least, I do not think it does.

Without a profanity filter, some of us may not be able to visit these forums (due to content filters) when we should be doing actual work.

Because, sometimes the kids want to bypass the profanity filter and that makes them easier to target by hammer.

That's a good point, but wouldn't it have to be reported in order for any moderator to ban them? It's rare for someone to be banned otherwise, because the moderators don't constantly check all of the threads. This leads me to say that profanity would only be a problem for de-railing threads, trolling, flaming, and spamming. All of those acts are bannable and would be reported, and thus, banned.

Why do we have stop signs, Chris? Anyone with a brain could ignore them...

It's simple, really. Rules are rules. They are not designed to be questioned. They are put in place in order to tell people what they can and cannot do. To deter them, rather than to strip them of capabilities.

What if I wanna swear at Omar in our private group? Atleast disable the filter in private groups...

I can understand its need in places like the Flood, but come on.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

As much as I like to use profanity in real life, I find the profanity filter here, oddly enough, forces people to utilize profanity correctly. Profanity is so overused on the internet that it really doesn't mean anything anymore. "-blam!-" on the other hand, is undefined, and therefore essentially represents every profanity simultaneously, but it's format (the dashes and exclamation point) prevents people from trying to evoke the emotion casually.

No one is going to take you seriously if your post consists of nothing but "-blam!-." Aside from this, even though "-blam!-" is filtered, it's an onomatopoeia that evokes a sudden, violent event. As such, the filter is still able to capture emotional substance of profanity, but only if used sparingly.

I wouldn't want to be reading through mindless profanities every 5 seconds. The filter does make a difference. Of course, if the community as a whole could be trusted, then a filter may not be needed.

We can just use words that aren't censored, like cuntnuggets. Or cockwaffles.

  • 09.30.2011 3:40 PM PDT

I wish that Bungie could take words that aren't profanities out of the filter. Otherwise, I don't see the problem.

  • 09.30.2011 4:03 PM PDT

ooga booga boooh

I can see why there is a profanity filter, although I don't like it myself. I guess I can see the forum easily being turned into "blam you blams" every other post.

The filter confuses people if you write something that is censored. It makes the whole entire sentence make no sense when the keyword is -blam!-. This is not a word guess site, but a forum. Remove this filter please.

When you censor words that aren't bad, you think the word means something bad. This is a perfect example.

  • 09.30.2011 4:23 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Because the Bungie webteam doesn't want you using their naughty words.

What I want to know is when we'll be implementing a swear jar.
