Subject: Why do we need the profanity filter?

Why do we have stop signs, Chris? Anyone with a brain could ignore them...

It's simple, really. Rules are rules. They are not designed to be questioned. They are put in place in order to tell people what they can and cannot do. To deter them, rather than to strip them of capabilities.

That dosen't mean we can't question them.

Because if it were lifted, all we would see is

"I hate Reach it's so -blam!- stupid I -blam!- -blam!- -blam!- -blam!- and Bungie -blam!- -blam!- -blam!- game -blam!-."

Except not censored. I have no problems with vulgar language, but it really dumbs down a sentence.

-blam!- yeah we need it!

But even though this is the internet, showing some class would be nice. And there really is no use for swearing. All swearing does is either to upset someone, hurt someone or show how small of a vocabulary you have.

ISU Cyclones!

I like it. If I had to come up with a reason besides just generally preferring that we don't need swears all over the place it discourages rage flaming really.

People are less likely to just outright get into an insult war if they know all that's going to happen is that their post is going to look silly being full with -blam-s.

Bypassing it is an easy way to tell an immature member apart and having it break a rule means we can also report him so he/she either shapes up or pisses off.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I think your question is null - we don't need it. So then, why do we have it? Because people can't manage two minutes without typing a four letter word; really, imagine what controversial topics, heated discussion, and the like would turn into. The filter, though easy to bypass, gives us a nice little bit of civility.

Also, this.
