Okay Okay, i know what your saying, that sounds crazy, but if we put our minds to it, we can do it. I am 100% serious and I know this can be achieved. Heres how it ill work: Everyone who wants to volunteer will say so here. When we are ready, we will build a bunch of remote controlled rocket powered robots who will fly to the moon and mine rocks. The rocks will be flown into orbit around the Earth where they will be smelted and assembled into a ring shape approximatly 40 miles in diameter. This is feesible.
The ring will itnitially be hollowed out and people will live in it while the colonists use plants to develop an atmosphere. It will be the perfect utopia and garden of eden. We will make lots of money by charging people to live on it. There will be vacation resorts, casinos, oceans, etc. Best of all, if there ever is a nuclear war or cotastrophe, humans can retreat to the ring.
Here is the science: The ring will be forty miles in diameter and two miles wide, one thousand feet thick. We will program robots to build the ring in space for us (or we can remote control the machines). Suprisingly, the only problem with my plan is how will the Robots be powered? They will be solar powered. Instead of having solar panels on each robot, there will be a gigantic solar panel stationed near the site. When the mining/building robots are low on feul, they will return to the station and charge themselves from a gigantic battery.
We will go down in history, so if you don't volunteer you may regret this for the rest of your life. Join up now, for project ringworld!

P.S> i am making 3D renderings of the robots and Halo and space station in 3ds max, i will post them here when done. We also need a person capable of making a website for our project!

I think you are insane.

At first yes, I thought you were joking. But I guess not. I shall quell my flame and speak in a reasonable manner. Ahem. This is an interesting idea. It would be, theoreticaly, possible. I have a few concerns however. If this was to be done, where would you get the money and materials for the robots? And if this was done, do you realise that you would be long dead by the time it was built and the atmosphere delevoped? We all would, our children would have to finish. And thier children maybe. Also, damaging the moon might affect the earth. To build the ring in space...wait...about the ring. If you were to do this just to be a Halo, you will never do this. If you do this to be what it could be, a haven away from earth, then building it ring-shaped would be illogical. It would be better to build it as a platform or something, that would be easier anyway. Oh yeah, if it was to be built in space, that would be very expensive. Everyone on the Bungie forums devoting thier live to this project would be unable to lift the materials needed to mine to the moon. You would need help from world leaders for this project. After typing all this, I feel rather stupid. I still really think you're joking.

edit---after thinking about it, it would take more generations of builders then that to finish the atmosphere... and about a website, it would just end up on the cover of the National Inquirer or whatever that loopy magazines called.

1st You would ruin the moon and would throw off tides.
2nd The glass that would hold the atmosphere would AMPLIFY HARFUL RADIATION!!
3rd How can you stop space debre from breaking the glass.
4th IT TOOK ALL THE EARTHS PLANTS 1 BILLION YEARS TO CREATE THE OXYGEN ATMOSPHERE!!!!
5th HOW WOULD YOU STOP IT FROM HITTING THE EARTH.
6th Solar Power is still a relativly new energy souce. It would cost billions of dollars just to buy the panels and get the huge power source in space without damage.
7th No Artificial Intelligences have been created that are that small in power.
8th NO ONE HAS FIGURED OUT HOW TO TURN SOLAR ENERGY INTO ROCKET FUEL YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF THEIR SOLAR POWERED HOW WOULD THEY GET AROUND.
9th Your taking a video game way to far.
10th All the nations in the world would not let you do this because it is a threat to the world.
11th HOW WOULD YOU MAKE IT ORBIT THE EARTH. IT WOULD TAKE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF ROCKET FUEL EVERY YEAR TO KEEP IT IN SPACE.
12th How would you keep the Earth and the Suns gravity from destroying it.
13th HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET THE CARBON DIOXIDE AND WATER TO THE PLANTS IN SPACE.
14th Nasa, Russia and China are the only ones with real space programs.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT WOULD ONLY TAKE A WILDCAT DESTABLEIZANTION OF A SPACE SHIPS FUSION CORES TO BLOW IT UP ex HALO 1

You belong in a mental facility

first off,you need much much more than just plants to create an atmosphere, and the ring is too small for enough gravity to hold an atmosphere.
second, solar power doesn't make fuel,it converts energy from the sun to usable energy, and a bttery probably would do jack squat.
third, until you research your plan perfectly,PLEASE dont post something so rediculous.

well...first of all, solar power is about a century old.
2 how would a halo throw off the moon?if it is just a little ways past the moon, the moon still has control.although mining it might be the issue you were referring to.
3only small ai's have been created,ie video games.
4 why would someone put a fusion core on a frikin ring
5 he could mine a planet more rich in minerals anyways, the moon is rather poor.
6 do you mean nasa or the us?nasa is the program, you referred to countries in the others.
and 7 orbiting is produced by gravity,he would only need enough rocket fuel to get it within the reach of earths outside gravity, but not in the atmospher, sort of like a satelite.
all the other points are valid.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I don't have time to read all these posts.

Even if you some how managed to get all the money and stuff, and incased it in glass to maintain atmosphere, which you won't, the whole idea is gravitationally impossible. If you got it spinning to to make artificial gravity, once you put it in orbit the people would fall horizontally to their dooms. If you just put it into orbit with no spinning with the bottom facing down, it would theoretically work but it would only have a minute amount of the ring inhabitable. If it was spinning here, the people would just fall of once it went 90 degrees around. The only way it would work is if you got it in between Mars and Earth so that it was being pulled in both directions at the same time, then started it spinning to create gravity. Good luck.

Oh my god.

My first problem with this idea--how are you going to implement gravity in the ring? In the real world, gravity usually attracts matter to a single point. How are you going to make gravity work on the curved sides of a ring?

My second problem--only a thousand feet thick? What the hell. If one comet or asteroid or anything smacks into the ring, it would easily split it. Then, all the pieces would separate, you'd kill millions of the ring's inhabitants, and massive boulder-sized metal debris would come raining down on earth, creating tidal waves, crushing homes, killing millions more people, and then we'd have a comet shower because all of the ring's oceans would flow into space, become frozen droplets that are the size of Trump Tower, and even more people would die. All hell would break loose.

A third problem--moon mining. Okay...so its diameter is 40 miles...that means its circumference is 40pi. So if you were to spread the ring out, it would be over 120 miles long. Considering the width of the ring...you'll need 240 square miles of moon to make this ring. Yeah, um...reducing the moon by that much would affect tides and would affect gravitational pulls on both Mars and Venus.

A fourth problem--money. Where are you gonna get money for a moon mining program and the thousands of robots? Better yet--where are you gonna get the money for the thousands of rocket ships that will send people to the ring?

Until you can find a solution to these four big flaws, then the project will never work.

Are you guys actually serious about this?

You do realize that the resources and authorization needed to do such a thing would..... keep you from even starting such a thing.

Cool idea. But you need to stop playing Halo for a couple of minutes, go out into the real world, and set realistic goals that don't involve a $1,000,000,000,000,000.95 price tag.
