Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

So, I've been thinking about this notifications system we've all been yammering about. It's great, I love it, but what if we're thinking small? What if we could make it. . . more?

What I had in mind is a set of options in our profiles. These settings would allow us users to stay In The Know about what we like and what's important in our forum life. The settings would normally be disabled, but if enabled a sub-list would appear/become usable/drop down containing:

*Thread creators get notifications if their thread is locked. (With or without explanation.)

*Subscription to a thread could allow a member to get updates if someone has quoted them in the thread later. (W/ choice of any and all quotes)

*Likes - we don't need a visible ego stick. This would just give a "nudge" to someone with a link to the post that was "liked". This allows us to give kudos in a personal way. I mean, I wouldn't want to embarrass burrito with how many more likes I get....

>_>
<_<
(With or without user input)

While I'm sure there's more to be thought of, these are just a few. But wait. . . there's more (but not for us)!!

*(Master Moderators) Global Notifications: This would allow the Mods to not only mess with us on April Fools, but let us know on stuff that's pretty important. Things like an update to the rules, the CoC - ToU, or stosh's nekkid pics finally going up on Ebay. (W/ Mod Only Notifications)

*(Moderators) Thread Tally: Upon locking a thread, in a separate Mod Only notification page, they would get a notification of the lock and by whom (With or Without explanation) with a link to the thread.

--To make this actually efficient, I would highly suggest a "Search" function for the Mod Only notification page. This would allow them to simply search a users name; providing the full wrap sheet including bans/warnings. It doesn't make our mods' volunteering much easier compared to searching a persons post history, but it would provide a little more detail with a lot less work.

That's really all I have; I should probably get back to writing my paper. . . but first, I hope you guys liked this little twist on the notification feature.

Please discuss, and Thank You.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

Ohhh, I like these ideas. What if you could add other notifications, like people posting in a thread you made, or notifications that apply to private groups?

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

I completely agree. Its all about getting the web team to implement it. The only thing i could see wrong with global notifications is abuse...you know Bungie would do it to. I also need to write my paper...

  • 10.02.2011 10:51 AM PDT

What a hipster.

I love these, especially the idea of being able to have a "subscription" to a thread. I've never heard that before and it's great. But I gotta tell you, the "stosh's nekkid pics" is what really drew me in =).

Though, I'm kinda iffy with the moderator Thread Tally. In theory it sounds like a good idea, but in my head it always ends up with a "battle to the death" competition, usually between Recon 54 and Evilcam =P.

Which is why I was thinking only Master Mods. Abuse is definitely a given, but really, only once Urk starts to globally message "poop" will we have something to worry about...

Also, slacking FTW! Well, actually, FTL at the moment....

Thank you, and I like those too - though the latter kind of goes without saying in my opinion =P. I'll throw them up quick like.

I'll only settle if the "Like" button is actually something more "Bungie themed" instead of a Facebook thing. For instance, the "Like" button in BF3 is "Hooah" or some silly thing like that.

I'm in favor of everything but the like button- that one just seems useless.

Everything else I would like to have- but even if I didn't, they'd be off by default anyway. There's no reason to not want to implement these ideas, unless you're the one programming them.

I feel as though this would go over with Achronos as well as anything that is, "social networking"

Although some of these are great ideas, I don't see it happening to Achronos, and I really despise the like system. It has often been described here that the like system is irrelevant on bungie.net because as long as a post is within the rules it deserved to be just as read.

I am fond of the notifications, and would love to see them implemented and all, but there is still an unanswered question. Who did you have in mind will create this system and run it?

I was considering hacking one out for greasemonkey which would mainly do with tagging threads so you could see what users think of them before entering them, but then I was sidetracked.

But someone with a little dedicated server space could definately set this up through greasemonkey. It could even be intergrated with coup de' bungie for an entirely heightened experience.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

I agree with all your ideas besides a like button. Personally I think any kind of "vote up" or "+1" buttons are useless. Besides, who wants to read "like this if you agree" at the end of every new member's thread?

There should be a special notification for when I post in a person's thread.

But other then that I think you got all the ones we really need.

How would notifications like this make it a social network site? It would be giving us users the ability to see what we want to see with very little to no hassle. I'm not pitching for Status', Bios', or a Friends Lists'; then I would understand where you're coming from.

As for Bungie Mobile, Hooah!!, but expecting new features like this pitch to be a simple update would be silly. It would probably have to be integrated into the system, which would be the perfect time to do it since I'm assuming they're working on the Newest Hawtness <- I like the sounds of that. They're really close to getting to forums with the Private Message support, I'd imagine some day - sooner rather then later - will provide Forum App Support. It would be a great marketing strategy due to their unique situation too - I can just imagine the publicity.

Well said, and I have to admit that I do agree. Yet sometimes I really like what someone has said, but I never feel that a post about it has any merit, or I don't have enough time to PM them. It's a quick, and simple, way to show your approval if you spend most of your time here in short bursts.

It's fine, I'm sure the search bar would've missed it anyways. I've been contemplating reposting my old ideas here lately because of all the notification discussion but I didn't want to steal anybody's thunder.

Nice ideas Rokit. There are some you provided which incorporate much convenience to the forums, especially the mass PM feature for a certain faction of the community (Master Moderators).

The subscription idea is a good one, but 99% of threads created don't last more than a week. Subscriptions should cancel after a set time, let's say X, at which point a users subscription to a thread automatically cancels (that is, if there is a limit to the amount of threads you can subscribe to).

These ideas are great, I thought of the idea for subscribing to Threads too, glad I wasn't the only one because I think it's genius!

I'm so tired of having to look back at my old posts to see if someone's replied to me, I just want an efficient way to put that wasted time outta the way. I've heard making notifications for this site is near impossible to code, but I think there could be some tricks out there to manipulate it.
