The subscription idea is a good one, but 99% of threads created don't last more than a week. Subscriptions should cancel after a set time, let's say X, at which point a users subscription to a thread automatically cancels (that is, if there is a limit to the amount of threads you can subscribe to).
It's interesting to think of the affect subscriptions could have on threads. Threads might begin to last longer due to individuals knowing they have been replied to. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing? The front page of a forum could soon fill up with the more popular threads while new threads are ignored.
While I believe notifications of some sort would be convenient, they could have an unintended impact on the way users post on Bungie.net, changing the forums we have come to know and love.
