Besides the next tier of fame and fortune, obviously.

First off, I'm not quite sure if this is the place for a thread of this nature. However, I did reread the rules and found this

The Bungie Universe Forum is for discussion of all elements of the storyline, backstory, plotline, and canon elements of all Bungie games, including Halo, Marathon, Oni, Myth, and others. Additionally, this forum is for discussion about Bungie's potential future projects.
And that seems to point toward this being the right forum.

I had been going to type a huge post debating with myself where I thought they were going to go, while making it extra wordy to keep with the mythic tradition, but I decided discussion would be better off if I didn't lay out a bunch of facts in front and squeeze out room for any other opinions.

Now, personally, I don't think Bungie is going to do another First Person Shooter. They've been doing FPS's for well over a decade now and I am almost 100% positive that they are done with the genre. So with that in mind I'd like to present to you the other game genres that I think they will look into.

MOBA: (See League of Legends, DotA, Heroes of Neworth)
It's a relatively new genre with lots of room for improvement. However, it's unanimously free to play and doesn't lend itself well to console integration.

RTS: (See Halo Wars, StarCraft, WarCraft 3)
Bungie has made RTS's before and supported Halo Wars. Personally I think there is a lot of room for improvement here to make it more new player friendly. RTS's have an added bonus of tournament play which means lots of money.

RPG: (See WoW)
I think we can all agree there next game is going to be multiplayer, so we can rule out single player RPG's. Unfortunately, it will be hard to really shine in this genre with Blizzard controlling it so well.

I'm sure there are more genre possibilities out there, but I took the liberty of excluding Minecraft-esque adventure games, Side scrollers, and other classic game genres because I have a feeling Bungie isn't going to go for the retro appeal.

From what I can gather, along with destiny speculation I believe its going to be a free world thing, kinda like minecraft

What is this destiny speculation?

Half Man.
Half Horse.
Half Machine.
All "Jerk Who's Really Bad at Math."

PS
No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

I've also seen it referred to as "Project Tiger."

As far as what Destiny/Tiger actually is, my first thought it that it's going to be some kind of FPS/MMO hybrid. I have no evidence to back that up other than a gut feeling.

  • 10.04.2011 9:42 AM PDT

I hope it's soon.

That's actually what it does seem like to me as well. I just watched the full ViDOC and they do seem to really like how having a first person scenario connects the player to the game. However, they mentioned building all the elements from scratch and having no idea what they're doing. Them saying that makes me believe it will be much more than just a FPS, I do believe that they are going to an open world environment, they mentioned they're love for the exploration side of games a few times and they showed some world creation at the end there.

My thoughts are like a Borderlands style game, but with much, much more content and much less scripted events.

Ad Infinitum

I would love to see them go back an do an RTS, I loved Wars. However, a futuristic RPG would also be welcomed by me. Maybe something post-Apocalyptic? Yeah that'd be nice. Science fiction is getting stale again.

But anyway, a post-Apocalyptic RTS or RPG would mean an automatic buy from me. I hope we get some hints soon.

Speculation about Destiny being a MMO is going around for ages now, and I am sort of on that boat too.

Although, let met get one thing straight right away:
MMO does not equal MMO-RPG. It simply means Massively Multiplayer Online. Nothing more than that. You could have a MMO of everything really, from MMORTS to MMO-"GTA" to MMOFPS.

That being said, I have been a supporter of Bungie going down the road of MMOFPS for quite a while. Even during the days of Halo 3 I've stated many times that for Halo to be revolutionary again, Bungie/MS/343i should look in the direction of MMOFPS (where the only big title, Huxley, got cancelled around that time).
Why? Because it's a relatively "new" genre. A genre that has no standard yet. A genre where Bungie could set a bar, be unique and innovative again (which is very hard in the regular FPS genre). Its a genre with potential.

And then came rumours about Destiny being a MMOFPS...and where there is smoke...

Now that Bungie is with Activision they can certainly work together with say....Blizzard? You know, who made the benchmark MMORPG World of Warcraft? Combine the best FPS studio out there (with plenty of experience in other genres as well) with the biggest force in the MMO domain and the result might be epic.

A persistant world with the vibe of classic sci-fi, with arenas (which function as multiplayer maps) where the action takes place.

Dreams maybe...but something I hope Bungie is doing instead of going the road of generic FPS.

I beta tested Huxley. It was interesting, but they took it off-line way to quickly. Haven't heard about it since.

  • 10.04.2011 11:39 AM PDT

I haven't played Huxley unfortunatly. It did seem very promising. Although it was a MMO Third Person Shooter if I remember correctly, with RPG influences right?

Shame it kind of faded into the background and out of the public's eye.

It is online by the way according to Wikipedia. And it seems it was in fact a MMOFPS and not a TPS as I recalled.
Game could have been huge. But like I said before: this genre is in need of something big, and Bungie could deliver that big thing.

A massive RPG game that spans a whole world with lots of stories, quests, characters etc may be possible.

I hope so =]

I'm a little torn over the whole RPG style of things. I will agree that it will feature large open world maps, similar to an rpg. But I feel like an actual MMORPG wouldn't work well. I had heard talk of a BorderWorlds, or some type of Borderlands MMORPG, but I think Bungie is looking at something different.

I mean, obviously, they've always wanted open worlds with natural life. Every one of their games has had some crazy animals that end up getting nixed at the end for more resources. I just don't think a Sci-Fi shooter lends itself well to an RPG environment. However, I will not deny Bungie's creativity and it remains as a possibility.

EDIT: Also, the last minutes of the ViDoc showed some power lines (I think) so the next game is going to be a Cowboys vs Aliens type of story line, calling it now!

EDIT 2: The power lines would suggest a time frame closer to our own if you missed that. And by "cowboy" I mean humans with similar technology to us if you didn't get that either.

I've lost faith in them with their misguided direction with Reach.
Hopefully they don't keep up the attitude they made Reach with, though.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

If I had a nickel for every time a developer made a game I didn't like and I lost all faith in them...well I wouldn't have any nickels because I'm not that shallow.

Either way, whatever Bungie is cooking up, it should be good. But I hope they use their free-reign wisely.

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

Whatever it is, I will continue to hold high expectations from them =)

Personally, I think the problem with Reach was the presentation. The player was told Reach was losing, but the player was roflstomping the covenant throughout the campaign. It didn't make sense, if I, an average spartan, can kill so many of the covenant then why can't the other spartans do it too?

Also, the game didn't display well on an old TV without surround sound, so it all detracted from the experience for me.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

They signed a deal with Activision, so I actually think it will be another FPS.

After all, FPS's are Activision's big money maker, and it would make business sense to put a great team like Bungie on their next big FPS.

Wait, if they have a deal with Activision... and Activision owns CoD...

Joseph Staten walks into the auditorium, dressed in a pink, flamboyant suit.
Anxious students look up at him as he approaches the podium.
He clears his throat.

"Good evening, Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Today, we will learn how to NOT create a crappy video game..."

im not sure but i REALLY hope they come up with the best engine, any game made by bungie, i will definitely play it... but i think they should start a new universe after they sadly let go of HALO )=

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

I would like a Grand Theft Auto type game from Bungie. It's the only type they haven't made. And judging by the "Gameplay between landmarks" piece we saw in the ViDoc, it seams plausible.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.

My contribution.
