Subject: Why are the Halo forums still here?

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I can understand that Bungie probably wanted to keep at least some of their Halo orientated fanbase for their next game, but it's creating problems and pointless threads. People are posting in the wrong forums (look at all of those locked Halo Reach threads in this forum!), and people are complaining to the wrong company.

Edit: I was just using the Bungie Community forum as an example. People have been posting in the wrong forums for a long time now. I didn't view it as necessary to list how Bungie could fix these problems, but since it sort of is relevant, I'll quote a post I made:

"You could remove all of the Halo forums and make one forum for Halo Discussion in the drop down menu. This would fix the problem of people posting in the wrong forum since these people almost always say that they don't know where the Halo forums are.

In order to fix the flow of feedback, you could get 343 Industries to post a message in Halo Reach directing where people should go, as well as Bungie posting a message on the homepage."

Even without the Halo forums still here, people would still be coming to Bungie and complaining for a long time because Bungie created Halo. Bungie's website is mentioned in all the instruction manuals. Bungie.net is the site everyone knows about, regardless of if it's correct or not.

And with the glitch today mentioning "Bungie Day" and directing people to Bnet specifically, there's no other way this could have turned out even if the Halo forums were all gone.

I imagine that sooner or later the Halo forums will disappear or be archived and put into read-only mode, but that probably won't happen until after Destiny launches.

Taking away the Halo forums would cause more people to post in this forum, so that wouldn't solve your problem.

Bungie are still the original creators of Halo even if they no longer manage the universe.

Whether or not the Reach Forum exists, people are still going to occasionally mistake the Community Forum for the "It's more likely that Bungie will hear me if I post here" forum. Also keep in mind that the Community Forum is a lot slower compared to other forums, so thus it clutters up more with locked threads as there isn't a constant stream of new threads to wash away the rubbish.

People are posting in the wrong forums (look at all of those locked Halo Reach threads in this forum!), and people are complaining to the wrong developers.

How would removing the Reach forum prevent this problem? Clearly, if members are posting about Reach in the Community forum, they either thought it was the correct place to post, or they did not bother to find the correct place to post. If the Reach forum were to be removed, neither of these problems would go away, so there would still be plenty of incorrectly placed threads (as well as many other threads complaining about the removal of the Reach forum).

People complaining to the wrong developer is annoying, but without the Reach forum, people would still do it, just in other forums more often (as some already incorrectly do). Besides, Bungie still wish to acknowledge their most recent game, and allow fans to discuss it here, even if they will not be able to give any "official" answers.

True. If anything, it provides a nice place for the lingering Halo comments to go. Besides, there is the notification that the forums aren't "official" anymore.

True, but we both know there are ways of fixing these issues. You could remove all of the Halo forums and make one forum for Halo Discussion in the drop down menu. That would help some but not all...probably not even most. Many will simply ignore a log-in message for Reach unless it pertains to new updates or free stuff (and even then, many people admit to skipping past them) and likewise, many will ignore any PSA on Bungie's front page directing people to Waypoint in lieu of going straight to the forums.

That's true, but in what other ways could you direct people? They may not be perfect, but I don't see any other solutions if people will just ignore notifications.

I don't think there's anything we can really do other than ride it out and wait; surely CEA and all future Halo games will mention in the booklet that 343 is in charge now and that all questions should be directed to Waypoint rather than here.

I've came to that conclusion myself, but I didn't think it would hurt to try something.

I think the key variable is time. If we were to consolidate forums, or remove the Halo game specific forums, there would be a massive flood of misplaced posts in the community forum.

However, I think after time and some new Halo games are released, people will start getting in the habit of going to the 343 forums (hopefully). At that point, it may make sense to do away with the Halo game specific forums at B.net. It's a transition, these things take time. There's bound to be some overlap.

These aren't new problems. People have been creating off-topic threads since the dawn of forum time. We have Halo forums because we created Halo and we want to provide a place for people to discuss our games.

I see. I guess it was sort of ignorant of me to assume that the web-team didn't know of the problem already, and to assume that the Halo forums were only created for feedback reasons. I'm still in favor of only having one forum to discuss Halo though.

I only asked a stats-related question, which, yes, pertained to Reach, because I thought the Community was the place to talk about web-related content. Seeing as Reach stats are still on bnet, I figured this would be a decent place to ask.

Probably because Bungie made Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach and it would sense to offer a forum where they can discuss the game?

If only I got a penny for every time someone posted in the wrong forum...

I <3 you too Bungie

Bungie thinks it's best to pull the bandaid off slowly. The Halo forums have been slowly pushed to the backburner. That and they're totally going to leave the forums behind in skeletal form for us to putt around in for years to come.
