I <3 you too Bungie

We know that they have been knocking around ideas for new IP since what...the close of development on Halo 2? That's when I first remember hearing them saying that they had to turn away coolness to keep making donuts.

I'm curious how far ahead they're planning when it comes to games and future IP. Are they working on concepts for a post-destiny game now? Are they looking at finances, operations, and seeing what they can do logistically 5, 7, 10 years down the road?

Thoughts?

What? Got something against Yetis?

I hope they announce their new IP on Bungie Day. That'd be the best Bungie Day evar.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I'm pretty sure that Bungie doesn't have the time to think of ideas for new games yet.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

As of last week they hadn't even written a line of code. My guess is that they plan very, VERY far ahead before doing ANYTHING.

Are you referring to Urk's facetious tweet about not having written a line of code "yet" on Halo 4?

I had written that post and then went to twitter to read the full conversation. Bungie mobile doesn't let me see what they replied to. :P

Yeah, I die a little inside every time I have to follow links to twitter from the Bungie app just to see a full conversation. That and when I have to hit the update button instead of simply pulling down to update.

"Did i ever tell you the Definition of Insanity?"

i think they were lucky because they were working closely with 343i which gave them the time to plan ahead. right now i think their main focus is on their new game

I have seen you future

I imagine that they have some sort of plan that goes years in advance. It wouldn't be detailed, more like:

Where do we want to be in five years?

What about 10?

15? World domination.

I'm certain that they have small teams for hammering out the details of a Universe long before they visit it to tell stories, and there is likely an engineering team that is perpetually playing around with new technolgies and prototyping various game elements.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

Well, if Cortana 5's IP/AI theory holds up, then they think quite far ahead.

But I think ultimately most of their goals are focused on what they're doing now to maximize the potential of their current project. Sometimes that ends up backfiring (Halo 2), but usually ends up great anyway (Halo 2).

I honestly don't have a clue. But what i've noticed about other companies is how they'd plan no more than 5 years ahead. Some Just follow Market demand. And sometimes the market shifts in terms of "whats hot" in less than a decade. The Genre that is a heavyweight right now appears to be the MMORPG. The last decade was held to shooters (omg halo!). But shooters first broke ground the decade before that with Doom, Quake, Half Life, and Marathon. And most successful MMO's Where from the later 1990's to 2004. What I think they might be doing tho is something similar to what they've done in myth. IT would seem to that costs have gone down quite a bit with game development, But one cannot be to sure with the amount of employees you have, Downsizing is a solution to cut costs further (which is what most companies are doing these days), and down more.....Due to improved tools and the ability to license a game engine. Also this is a good thread. I like it! :D

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -

Considering the length of time between accomplishing steps 5 and 6 of the world domination plan, I'd say it's safe to assume they plan well in advance.

As for whether they have another game in the planning stages, it's hard to say. If they only plan to work on one series at a time, I say no. But Bungie has gotten very large over the past few years, and Harold Ryan has already mentioned (back after Halo 3) that it would be nice to have more projects and keep the teams small; he said it would be a way to make sure everyone felt like their contributions really meant something. I think he might have been talking about ODST back then though, or even just speculating.

So yeah, I think it's possible that Bungie is already considering what their team should do after "Destiny".
