"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."
There are three methods to advertise, as we all know. Here are my thoughts on each:
1) Classifieds- These can work, but it depends on how you do it. There is no guarantee about it working however. Naturally, the only way an ad would be able to attract me is if it sounded interesting. It requires a good explanation of the group, explains how active it is, etc. Not my favorite method, but it's not worthless.
2) Signatures- I'm not much for simple name links. They are far too bland for my taste. I prefer at the least something that gives a short explanation of what the group is about. If the group is about discussing cookies, I want to know. And since the title doesn't always explain it, it's nice to have an idea. Personally, my favorite is something that makes a statement about the group. For instance, there is that link to my group in my sig. (Trying to keep this as far from an ad as possible). Since my group is about discussing philosophy, I use something that puts forth a somewhat philisophical topic. I'm not exactly sure how each group would do it, but as long as the reference is different, it is good enough.
3) Private Messages- The best known way. I can't stand generic "Join my group 'XXXXXXXXXX'" advertisements. They're boring, and give me no reason as to why I should join. I am not one who cares for "I noticed you on the forums," because it doesn't actually mean anything. I notice a lot of people, but I don't ask each and every one of them to join my group. Private Message ads should include something that is personal. You should notice something about the person's method of posting, or line of thinking, and appeal to that. Make them feel special. Generic members don't help too much.
So to close, my personal method of advertising is through my signature. Private Messages can't help my group because of certain, hopefully obvious reasons. Classified ads don't work too well for me on occasion, but if I want to try, I will try. I just stick with what I know, and let things work themselves out.
