I think a very good idea would be to compile an FAQ topic about the Bungie forums; including links to the rules, explanations of moderator functions, how to deal with any problems and so on. Then it could be posted on the forums main page, or on the community main page.

I thought that would be a good idea, too. It would help stop uninformed users from asking obvious/stupid questions, and thus would help to make certain forums at least a little bit cleaner.

Help, but admittedly not prevent altogether; though I'm sure some help is better than none.

Good idea. Except for the penultimate question. I think that is one possibility, but people shouldn't really have to click multiple links to learn the rules, perhaps we should just compile all the best stuff to make an effective FAQ. NOTE: This is not an official FAQ.

***Example FAQ***

Q: Are there any rules or guidelines I should follow?
A: Yes. In addition to Bungie's Terms of Use and Code of Conduct, there are specific forum rules pinned (stuck at the top of the forum for all to view) in the appropriate boards.

Q: What is spam?
A: Spam is, basically, unnecessary posts that flood the forums with junk. It can be off-topic, stupid, offensive or generally unwanted material. You are not to spam.

Q: What is flaming?
A: Flaming is the act of aggression unto others. It includes attacking, threatening, violent, unwelcoming or offensive posts. Flaming is disallowed.

Q: What is bumping?
A: Bumping is when you deliberately post so your thread comes first on the topic list, in a manner that does not continue the (allowed) discussion and looks for attention. Often, bumping is when you post directly after your previous post on the same topic (AKA. Double post), but can be you helping others to bump.

Q: What are trolls?
A: Trolls are rule breakers. You are not to 'feed' them (provide them with material so they can continue their offensive acts, even a simple reply to a troll can cause this). Ignore, do not feed the trolls.

Q: What are moderators?
A: Moderators (or mods) are individuals selected by Bungie to moderate and help keep order in the forums. You can tell a moderator by their special avatar (image) which has the word 'moderator' printed on it. They have authority in the forums, so listen to what they say. (Include mod list here?)

Q: How do I deal with spam?
A: You don't. As in you don't respond in any way, form or fashion, instead follow the procedure below.

Q: Where and how do I report spam?
A: You may report spam in the Moderators' chapter **Note:I would link directly to the database, but I'm not sure how the New Hotness will affect that**, or by PMing (Private Messaging) a moderator or Bungie employee. Be sure to include a link or board name.

That's all I've got for now.

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

I'm going to pin this, because this is pretty good and once sketch gets back, I think we might talk to him about making the rules easier to understand and maybe shorter.

Maybe there should be two sections to the rules; "what you need to know now" (shorter version) and the full version.

Also, maybe a more graphic FAQ would be useful. We see my method of putting the Q and the A in bold, and Sketch's method, but I really think a more clear layout would work. However, the forums being limited to the BB code, it's much harder to do.

Well, graphical blocks like I suggested would help then; I wouldn't say you're incorrect, but not correct either. If people can't be bothered (or don't want to) read an FAQ, then why would they read a thread for the same purpose?

Maybe what you are suggesting could be used in the advanced section I thought on, to show examples in order to prove the point.

I know that's not really what you're saying, but if they don't want to read, they don't want to read and it won't matter which format you display the information in. As long as it gets out.

There's time to expand the FAQ. Maybe a more 'comedic edge' as you're suggesting would benefit, maybe not.

In addition, there probably should be an explanation of why the forums aren't working sometimes (for those who don't read the main page news).

Q: It doesn't let me into the forums! What do I do?
A: Your best option is to wait and try again later. Bungie are trying hard to fix the problem, and apologise for any inconvinience.

Spamming Bungie since 2004!
Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
GT-I Final I (i's)
Plz uze prper inglish n ur poasts!11! it makez it eazeer 2 reed!

The comedic edge would work. Maybe, when the forums aren't working, they should link it to a page like the one that you get when you try the column.

And, you know if you need help, ask me.

i kinda know one thing....i dont see it happen much...but some people tend to dis-respect members that have been here longer than them....and because bungie fills our brains wif useful information that means the members that have been here longer are smarter and know and tad more than the new people......

PICTURES! Pictures speak a thousand words!

If we had pictures in the rules then more people will actually look at picture than read the rules.

Also!

What is a chapter?
What is a clan?
2 topic that need to be discused in the classifieds!

Unfortunately it seems many are at a preschool level....

Chapters and clans definitely need to be clearly defined as different.

And for the picture idea, I think the graphical blocks I mentioned would be more suitable for the purpose.

Disrespecting newer members can be a pretty big problem, and really only falls into the flaming category - however, if the older members don't know that, then they deserve to be banned.

Are there any clan strings/ forums that are worth looking at?

Also is there anything about guilds?

what do you mean by clan strings? i have a clan if thats what you mean... and its definitely worth lookng at.

but this is the WRONG place to go about advertising yourself for a clan. check out the classifieds... yoozel just made a clan listing there so its all good. also various clans post there all the time.

and i dont know what you mean by a guild, please explain

Well i asked yoozel if he was ever going to make a thread about the difference between a clan and a chapter. Ane he said he was working on it, and it sould be up by the new hotness.

  • 09.16.2004 10:31 AM PDT

Chapters and clans definitely need to be clearly defined as different.
But a clan can have a chapter. And then they would be the same thing.
