Subject: Why is this still here?!

I'm talking about the space generated above the quote when you quote someone.

It's stupid. I very (very) rarely see anybody on these forums quote on top of posts. The only user I know that does this is the person in charge of the whole way this kind of stuff works, which is Achronos. The ninjas don't even do it!

So please tell me: if the majority of Bungie.net posters post a quote then a reply instead of vice versa, then why do we still have that stupid, unnecessary space?!

I can safely say "inb4PeoplePostRepliesAboveQuotesInThisThread", as it always happens when this subject matter is brought up.

Well this looks stupid.

And if you didn't already read what I said below, you are reading the reply first, being confused on why I brought up such subject matter in this said reply, then you read what I replied to, then you have to sometimes re-read the reply to completely understand the statement/argument made.

It's not, I just don't see any reason why it shouldn't be fixed either.

  • 10.06.2011 6:16 PM PDT

I quote like this. Not because Achronos does it, but because it seems to look like it makes more sense.

Also, regarding the space on top of the quote, is it really that big of a deal to you?

Half Man.
Half Horse.
Half Machine.
All "Jerk Who's Really Bad at Math."

PS
No, I do not want to join your clan/group.

I see a lot of users post above the quote personally. While it may seem a tad silly, I find it even more ridiculous that someone would actually bother to complain about it.

Yes, because it's stupid.

Right here. Most users probable read my reply since they did not know what I was replying to.

Plus, most people don't quote like that. It's a waste of time and I'm sure it takes less than a couple minutes to reconfigure something like that (from what I've heard) onto the next script to be upgraded with the servers to this website. Simple -blam!- that can make things just a little bit easier for everybody.

Thanks for that valuable input, guys, it's way useful.

Take any active thread with any level of back-and-forth and start scrolling down. Quote pyramids inevitably build up. Quoted quoted quoted quotes getting quoted. At that point you're talking an extra five or six superfluous lines being added to every post, as most people have long since given up fixing them themselves. This page, for example, has 16 blank lines that shouldn't be there, both uglifying the page and making it harder to read; the alignment of text within posts becomes inconsistent.

If you can't see why that might be irritating, then there's really no helping you.

Could you explain why including the content you're replying to after you replied makes more sense than quoting it before you reply? All common sense would dictate the latter to be the norm, which, incidentally, it is, unless you're living in 1989 and using usenet.

Ya, seriously. Talking about the content before the quoted material makes no sense at all. Explain yourself.

  • 10.06.2011 6:28 PM PDT

How? Is it disrupting discussion? It only takes you three seconds (not even) to delete the layer above your quote if it's really that dang of a big deal. Also, why should I put the old remarks on top? I'm not conversing with anyone else but the poster in the quote unless I specified otherwise, and it seems more logical to have the more updated response on top. I mean, why put something you've already read on top?

Old remarks are references, and some people may not consider these remarks "old" because they may not have read the said remarks.

More "logical"? Okay, that's a reasonable opinion. But seeing as how the (giant) majority of posters place text below the quotes instead of above, the space seems unnecessary and only a bit of an annoyance when you see that most users don't take the time to remove it.

  • 10.06.2011 6:32 PM PDT

The annoyance is people like you flipping out over less then two centimeters of text space on a computer screen. The only logical explanation with being so obsessed over this problem is if you had an OCD over it which still then constitutes me saying, "You can just delete the damn layer".

Don't be so obtuse. You know fine well the issue is not the space in my posts, it's the spaces added to every other -blam!-'s posts that never get removed.

I cannot understand why you're so genuinely hostile to people simply asking for one of the most irritating, obvious and long-standing bugs on b.net to be fixed. You're right that it's a little issue, but it's a little issue every time someone hits the quote button, and directly impacts on the readability of the forums; the forums' primary function.

  • 10.06.2011 6:40 PM PDT

And what is preventing you from responding to them and fixing it? Or just fixing it without responding to them?

Alternatively, a more pressing question, what's stopping you from actually reading my posts before opening your mouth to vent?

I'm pretty sure that if it's intentional, then it's not a bug.

Also, it's not really an eyesore. I can read posts without even noticing it.

  • 10.06.2011 6:49 PM PDT

I'm just sayin,

If you seriously have a problem reading what someone is posting cause he didn't press backspace/delete before he began typing, you should really reconsider if you should be posting on the internet.

It seems like some sort of relic to me. Putting the quote under the body only makes sense if it's clear who and what you're replying to, like in oldschool threaded forums and email. In those cases it saves you from scrolling unnecessarily.

Here, though, not only is the quote the only indication of what you're responding to, but you have to scroll the entire page anyways since the next post is under it.

So yeah, I've never understood the logic behind doing it here.
