13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

...without the actual removal of forum privileges. Also, before you ask, yes. I did just return from a seven-day.

I would've learned a lesson and not been a repeat-offender if I'd been warned as apposed to banned.

-Just my opinion.

Second offense = ban. I think you all misunderstood my proposal.

...not even a little bit...

If you're banned you actually should and probably will care about getting banned in the future... and so will do what you can (to an extent) to avoid committing the same error as you did last time.

With a warning, you're just like, "Oh... that happened. kthxbai."

“Dinkleberg!” is a catchphrase used by the character Dad in the Nickelodeon cartoon show “The Fairly Odd Parents.” In the show, Dad has an unrelenting hatred towards the well-to-do and happy neighbor, Dinkleberg, who gets blamed for everything bad that happens. The phrase is used in a similar way, by giving the blame for everything bad that happened to Dinkleberg. This can vary from mundane day-to-day problems to natural disasters.

If you deserve to be banned, then you deserve to be banned.

If you don't deserved to be banned, but still did something wrong, you deserve a warning, which delivers less effect than a ban, because you aren't being punished, just warned.

Plain and simple.

Nope. More like:

Forum Ninja: "Hey, don't do it again."

Me: "Oh, alright."

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

I disagree. If my first moderation action had been a warning, I honestly wouldn't have taken it too seriously. Instead, my first ban was 14 days and I haven't broken the rules on purpose since then.

I don't break rules on purpose. I can't live without my daily dose of the Bungie.net community.

Rewrite in response to OP edit:

I go into a thread about our favorite employees. Post sequence.

1: I like stosh.

2: Stosh hates toast.

Me: Why hate toast?

2: Toast sucks.

Me: Toast is amazing. The fact that you can simply apply thermal energy to a slab of bread and instantly make it 100x better is amazing! And then simply by spreading the byproduct of a farm animal on it, it's awesomeness is increase another 100 fold! It's the best thing ever!

2: Are you -blam!-ing retarded? Toast is the most disgusting thing ever. Wheat is nice and soft. Putting toast in a toaster goes against all nature. It makes it all hard and unbearable. And putting butter on it doesn't make it better. You can't polish poop, dude.

Me: You're mother smells like a hamster on a sunday evening.

2: You're fat.

Me: You're stupid.

*bans for both of us*

The above situation warrants just a warning for each of us? Well, that don't make no senses.

There should be a strike system. 1 offense earns you a warning. A second offense earns you the disability to post in your own thread, but still be able to post in others. On the third, you get banned.

It depends how bad the first offense is, but generally a minor offense should get a warning for the first time. I suppose it all comes down to how the moderator sees the offense.

You took the words right out of my mouth. This is what I would've said, so I totally agree with this.

On that note, even a minor offense can get you banned depending on the context and the mood/blood-alcohol level of the moderator who finds it.

They don't HAVE to give warnings. There's no rule book** on how to moderate. They can ban you for 2 off topic posts even if its a first offense. It's really entirely subjective most of the time.

**Unless HFCS has a post hidden to non-members that's a "rule book" (guideline, really) of sorts.

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

If you get a warning saying to stop doing something, it means to stop doing said thing. When you're warned, you lose your special hat if you have one and it will take longer to get a new hat.

When you're banned you can not post and you lose your hat. The warning system works fine as is.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

If a member has been warned/banned more than once, it is clear that the previous warnings/bans did not make enough of an impression to get the user to read, understand and follow the Membership Agreement and forum rules.

It shouldn't be, "but I was never warned/banned for THAT particular thing!" A ban or a warning means that it would be a good idea to refresh your understanding of the rules and not treat these forums as your personal litterbox.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

While I agree with your philosophical reasoning, if you're talking about your personal anecdotes, I can't agree. You've had warnings before. Ninjas see that, and adjust potential punishments accordingly.

Though if this is just a philosophical argument, as I said, I agree. If whatever "you" (not you OP, but the proverbial member) did wasn't that bad of a violation, then a warning is the best action a ninja could take. Though if it was a bad infraction, a ban would be better than a warning. That is actually Bungie's policy for bans already. If its a minor infraction, you get a warning. Though if you continue to violate the rules, bans are introduced, and ban lengths ascend as violations pile up.

It's sometimes the occasion where the warning was weeks prior, and it's forgotten.

I'm not doing it for personal preference (Okay, I might be just a little), but I've seen bans applied where warnings were more justified.

That doesn't mean every situation warrants a "Warning -> Ban -> Worser Ban" system. Look at the example I gave above (I edited my second or third post). Sometimes a ban is warranted from the get-go. It isn't always necessary for people to get a warning just because they haven't broken the rules before.

Thing is, mods here are pretty inconsistent. You, for example, are pretty lenient. Other mods are much harsher.

For example, I saw a thread locked a couple days ago with a story about how oral sex can cause certain types of cancer. A story that you also posted awhile ago.

The last time I was banned by a mod was when I made a joke about math using letters as numbers. The mod didn't get it and thought it was spam. When I explained the joke, my appeal was still denied, even though I posted on-topic in the thread as well. Now, I've seen mods (especially you) make jokes like that all the time. Sometimes, getting banned really is a matter of which mod is on, and which mod gets you better. We have no idea who's going to ban for what.

Inconsistencies abound is the norm here on BNet, as you should expect it to be with a system that is based on "Okay, ninjas, read the forum rules, interpret them in the way you deem most logical and fitting to what we actually meant with them, and moderate accordingly."

Think of it this way. They're like the supreme court justices interpreting the constitution. Now, there have been some pretty -blam'd!- up supreme court cases over these 200-some-odd years. But each justice has pretty much stuck to their principles and their beliefs when deliberating. Now, imagine there were 31 Supreme Court justices. Imagine how much of a subjective and inconsistent system that would be. That is BNet, my friend.

No.

Now of course we don't know exactly how the system works, though, it would only be common-sense. Warnings are just a little slap-on-the-hand for being bad. Bans are the actual time-out.

I agree that warnings can have the same, if not a better, effect. Banning a user prevents them posting otherwise positive contributions elsewhere, it can also make them resentful. Those who appreciate the public forums tend to appreciate a warning and will take notice (the fact it is always present on their profile page is also helpful *evilgrin*). Of course this all depends on the member and their violation, which is why it is far better to allow for moderator's to use their judgement, than having a strict ban policy.
