The Forerunner, the Great Journey, and Heaven Theory

[Announcement Trailer] Halo: Forerunner

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

This site likes to promote some sense of community and fraternity. The word being uncensored provides for more opportunity for that ideal to be shattered.

I just can't agree with you or see how what you are saying is true.

As far as the Bungie community goes. For the most of it, the following word sums up my feelings about it. This inlcudes many of the mods and intolerant below 18 years of age members:

"Meh"
I'm unsure as to why that's the paragraph you chose to address. The one prior to that actually explains the dilemma you're facing.

So if I said that you had no dick, would that be less emotional than describing a type of people?
People do not hold political views or are emotionally invested in whether or not I have a dick. Right now, in fact, I'm getting mad that you're still "presenting" your side of the argument while you've just shown you barely understand it (not the fact that you decided to think up an insult if I can even call it that).

If you seriously cannot understand the meaning of my post, whether or not you're able to discuss your magnum opus on sexual orientation (on a video game forum of all places) is the least of your concerns.

Oh no, I understand where you are coming from. I was simply trying to state that nobody can judge whether or not a word or statement is more or less "emotional", as you say.

I addressed that paragraph becuase it was the one that made the least amount of sense to me.

However, the only real dilemma that I'm facing is that you seem to enjoy making situations unnecessarily difficult and confusing.

Hmmm, I'm tired.

Yes they can. It involves the bare minimum of common sense and critical thinking. I thought when people called this community socially oblivious (substitute for the emotionally charged r-word), that was only a joke...

I enjoy the truth. That's what I strive to attain in all of my endeavors. Is calling on you to defend your position beyond the first (and very easy) step of anger putting to much undue strain on you? My apologies. When you're talking about decisions that impact other people they need to be thoroughly examined instead of blindly accepted.

  • 10.09.2011 12:19 AM PDT

I guess I'll have the common sense to go to bed now. Very good argument though.

I didn't even both to read this thread because I know it is just a stupid complaint about the profanity filter.
Oh, my mistake...

It's a stupid complaint about an even stupider topic.

OP, you're bad.

Whoo.

-blam!-.

The profanity filter seems to be working, that used to be a n-word, related to blacks.

The same way the g-word is related to people that prefer same gender relations.

The constitution of bungie.net probably has some rules censoring words that are heavily towards hate speech, trolling (nobody is innocent from being one, even moderators and Bungie employees troll), and people who just plain hate everything . But bungie.net also doesn't seem to be a constitutional monarchy either. it uses a general mix of things. Quite uniqure for a site. I sure do miss the old B.net layout though. it was AWESOME!

Which is all fine and good except that non-offensive references to black people (black, African-American) aren't blammed, but non-offensive references to same-gender-relations-preferrers are (-blam!-, homo-blam!-, homo-blam!-ity).

I did.

He's comparing the G-word to the N-word and saying that it should be censored just like the N-word, ergo there is no issue with the filter.

However, he missed the point of the OP. OP's problem is that we can't make any (direct and non-obfuscated) references to same-gender-relation-preferrers -- be those references offensive (Q-word), debatable (G-word), or non-offensive (H-word). Even if there is justification in banning the G-word, there is little if any justification in banning the H-word.

The G-word isn't the only way to make reference to same-gender-relations-preferrers, just as the N-word isn't the only way to make reference to black people. However, non-offensive black-referencing terms are not censored, while non-offensive same-gender-relations-preferrer-referencing terms are, and that is the OP's beef with the filter. We can't even make any references to the minority group in question, even though such references are permissible when dealing with other minorities.

The problem with your arguement is that shut up you African American is about as offensive as shut up you stamp collecter, while shut up you H-Word, F-Word, G-Word, etc is actually rather offensive.

And the other counterpoint is black is a colour, some people might have forgotten, so it would be unreasonable to censor it. I mean I should be able to talk about the background of this site, the colour of these letters, the colour of my TV, etc without the word being censored.

The primary purpose of the word isn't to categorise a minority.

Not to mention anything refering to intimate relations is censored, that's why the second half of -blam!--blam!- is also censored, it's not like they're playing favourites with -blam!- orientation.

Notice I can't say -blam!- or -blam!- either.
(Male -blam!- organ, female -blam!- organ.)

There's also the issue of personal beliefs, it could be censored for the same reason religious and political discussion is prohibited, people just can't be civil when discussing the matter.

Why can't we put Bungie Cards here?

Interesting that no halo game has ever had a gay character. I'd never thought about that. MC is a robofile though, so I guess they do cater for some sexual abnormalities.

But how come, if these words can be used offensively, why are they not censored as well... Only that little G word is.
Ginger. There, I said it.

Honestly, the only time I see these words being used in a negative light is when threads addressing the problem pop up. Trust me, the Moderating Team is aware of your concerns. If Achronos thought it was "dirtying" up his forums, he would fix it.

I realize you have good intentions, but when it comes to addressing a specific problem in this manner, and also people using the words, it works the same as bumping spam to the top of a page. People see, people do.

the word -blam!- is used ina derogatory fashion while you can use the world homo-blam!- to use it in the exact same way but still sound mature......or ARE you a -blam!- and pissed because you think you are being discriminated against?

So, a long complaint thread about the filter.

Original threads gonna come up any time soon? Doesn't look like it.

Not about the entire filter. I'm ok with most of it. Just not the whole unfair censoring of minority groups. I'd laugh so hard if people ever did start using "Jew" or "Black" in place of the G word and Bungie started censoring them as well. Of course, it would be just as wrong, but I'd laugh for a second, none the less.

Jew is usually not used offensively.

Black is a color. The fact that you're using it as an example of another word that should be censored 'as long as the g word is' is ridiculous and obviously not a well thought out argument at ALL.

The g word is hardly used in a constructive discussion due to the nature of the internet being a bunch of 12 year olds who don't know how to carry on a civilized conversation without saying that someone else is of a minority group who happens to have a certain "boom boom happy times" preference that maybe said 12 year old doesn't. Find me a situation where the "g word" has been used in a productive discussion that hasn't gone downhill (very quickly).

Quick google search

I love google.

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

I have never seen Jew being used as an insult on BNet. And being the name of a religion, it will cause more problems than solve. And black is a color, why would you want that to be censored? Asian and Mexican are nationalities, so you want them to be censored as well?
You're not making a strong case for yourself.
Posted by: Xeno Prodigy

I guess they must also replace Jew, Black, Mexican, Asian, and mentally handicapped with the word blam.

  • 10.09.2011 7:14 AM PDT

Friends before pixels.

Agreed.

I'd rather have it be used as an insult, rather than it being censored completely.

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

I don't even know how to respond to idiocy of this level.

  • 10.09.2011 8:21 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Guys. Seriously. We all know the profanity filter doesn't make any sense. It's not going to change, so just quit being so concerned about not being able to use your big boy words and use the cornucopia of language that you can. Maybe thirty words of the English language being off limits does not herald the end of the world.
