I personally believe that the BoBs on Reach are actually Ossoona ("...a temporary rank bestowed by the Prophets of the Covenant upon specially selected Sangheili warriors...). HaloNation states that "the mission of an Ossoona was to collect information on the enemy while avoiding any type of combat", which seems to be the case for most BoBs: most are hidden behind switchbacks or in structures (as in Winter Contingency ), are well off the beaten path (in Nightfall ), seem to watch the player (in Pillar of Autumn ) or are deployed behind enemy lines a safe distance behind (in Long Night of Solace ). Those who are discovered do fight back, which directly contrasts with the thought of them fighting. However, Halo Nation does NOT state that Ossoona do not fight at all ("...while avoiding ant type of combat."). Once being seen, an Ossoona would most likely fight back in order to be able to get their information to the Prophets. Considering how Reach was a major target for the Covenant, and how they were trying to find Earth, the Prophets may have deployed Ossoona to salvage information while the Covenant Armada destroyed the planet.

I was under the impression that BoBs were randomly generated easter eggs and were a reference to the Marathon series.

Gold Elite ranger armor =/= stealthy.

Not only that, our one example of one had grey armor (I think), and only a plasma pistol...

They are, but I'm putting them in canonwise context.

Also, upon further analysis, Ossoona is a 7 reference (7 letters).

I think you're reading too much into it. The whole point of an Ossoona is to be stealthy. Gold armor, blue visors, and duel wielding plasma rifles is not stealthy. I'm pretty sure the BoBs are just something that Bungie put in as a joke.

Canon-wise they wouldn't be that role either as members of that role simply didn't break stealth...

Some Bobs openly charge and attack you. (sword base ones, the one in tip of the spear with a fuel rod gun.)

That makes no sense...

If their job is getting information to the Prophets, surely they'd flee and let the ground troops take care of anyone who spotted them. Staying to fight will definitely not enable them to get their information to the Prophets when they're armed with only a plasma pistol...

So fighting back and risking death instead of fleeing the battle to deliver valuable information fits the role of stealth? Ok, thanks for the tip...

You are correct in that point. I apologize. However, one mustn't assume that Ossoona are strictly prohibited to carrying Plasma Pistols. If one sees the Elite at the beginning of Winter Contingency on Legendary as a BoB as well, then it most definitely is an Ossoona , in the points that it flees, has Active Camo, refuses to shoot, and has a Data Pad. However, it holds a Plasma Repeater. Therefore it is impossible to determine the shield strength and firepower allowed to an Ossoona based solely on The Fall of Reach , as we are appearing to. The Ossoona aboard the Pillar of Autumn was killed by a pistol headshot, but the Winter Contingency one can survive multiple headshots.

You forget that Sangheilians are a proud race who would most likely see stealth operations as cowardly. My conjecture is that an Ossoona would temporarily engage in a battle if deemed necessary to protect its information, then quickly flee once disengaged.

The one you mention is the only one that could be considered an Ossoona... the others are more easter egg then canon.

Why? the legendary WC one is actually leaving with intel.

  • 10.11.2011 12:22 PM PDT

I don't think they were put in specifically for that but that is a very good link to the canon. I'd give your work a thumbs up.

EDIT: I'd just like to add, the camouflage is definitely in because BOBs always disappear in time. The other thing I'd like to point out is that BOBs have the Ranger armor which has a helmet that covers the entire face and seem to be electronically powered. It is said that Ossoona have recording devices (so the devices could easily be in the helmets). This makes your point even more believable.

Why are you here?

I've been thinking about this and it seems very likely.

I don't think Bungie put it in for anything serious (Well unless it's for challenges or something 343 could be planning out)

If you put it canonically though, they could be. Most definatley the Winter Contigency BoB.

I am...whimsical today.

I feel as though I'm being somewhat dumb, but what's a BoB in the context of Reach?

Its just those easter egg Elites that pop up in Reach, the gold rangers who appear every now and then. I personally think its entirely an easter egg with no canon significance, just like the Ape family in H3, and the hidden Myth music eggs.

  • 10.11.2011 10:28 PM PDT

And what about the BOB in Oni Base (third mission), the one with random armor and dual weilding? IMO it looks like Bungie wanted to add a different kind of BOB in each level, but they run off of time.

ONI Sword Base also had those white BoB's that are Field Marshall's but I guess that's not very stealthy also

Another possibility (which I don't like to believe in) is that BoBs are robots due to being shown as Elite Light Vehicle postgame. But this really down't stand up, because they spurt blood like any other elite. However, this could explain the white random armor elites. But I digress...

Which would also explain them being called Born on Board, as they could've been built on cruisers, corvettes, etc....

An Ossoona wouldn't be in a battle zone, it would be like the one Keyes killed shortly before evacuating the Pillar of Autumn.
