It's true he didn't die, but the question is where did he go? Somewhere between Jenkin's recording and the beginning of First Strike, Johnson had to have either played dead, be knocked out, or fought furiously against the Flood until a few survivors in a Pelican picked him up just before Halo exploded (probably right after him and that Elite stopped hugging). Or maybe the Flood ignored him completely because he was immune to them due to the plasma poisoning he suffered. Hmmm, Covenant use plasma, Flood are allergic to plasma...

knocked out not likely, he would have been infected. played dead(lmfoa) he still would have been infected. fighting his way out seems the most likely ofcourse but its difficult to understand seeing as its even a struggle for the chief.

like they sed he is immune to the flood. So they couldnt turn him or infect him at all! so they probebly paid less attention to him so it might have been easier to escape so probebly did fight his way out, and succeded because the flood didnt pay as much attention to him as they would to some1 who could be infected.

Okay, I've heard this question a lot. I'll clear it all up for you. Johnson has Boren's Syndrome, which disrupts the neural system. He went untreated and somehow survived. Since his neural system is disrupted, the Flood cannot find a resonance to match up with his neural system to infect him. He most likely fought the Flood until he was picked up by a Pelican.

By the way, in the Legendary ending, the Marine that is fighting with the elite is NOT Johnson. Bungie used his skin, but did not intend for that marine to be THE Johnson. Example: in AotCR, you see a group of marines near the Scorpion tank. "Johnson" is there, with the other marines. This CANNOT be Johnson, because in the book, "The Flood", Johnson is with Keyes in the swamp at this point, and the Flood has already been released.

That should clear up most questions dealing with Johnson.

I respect your opinion, I'm probably just going to disagree with it.

Yes, he is mentioned somewhere to have picked up the flood trait for quick healing. But, all the same, when the Halo comic thingummybob comes out, we'll find out how Sgt Johnson got out!
