Why is the last level in CE called the MAW? I can't quite understand it, anyone care to explain?

Because its 10x cooler than being "Belly of the beast".

Who knows. It could be anything; Halopedian speculates, for instance, that it might either be a reference to the Flood, or to the adage, "victory from the jaws of defeat."

I've always just felt that it feels aesthetically right for the level. The way "The Maw" looks and rolls of the tongue just plain matches the level, from start to finish.

I heard someone say once (paraphrasing here) "Multiflag on Blood Gulch with your friends is what makes Halo, Halo." I GUARANTEE that more people agree with that sentiment than "Getting a 50 in MLG is what makes Halo, Halo." - Oboewan42

You fight to the front, then exit threw a -blam!-storm in the back.

Maw is defined as "The jaws or throat of a voracious animal."

It makes sense to me. Entering the Pillar of Autumn is alost certain death with 3 different opposing forces occupying it.

Here's your answer. It's not Mall, it's Maw.

'Maw' goes back hundreds of years to describe something of terryfing, dangerous and all consuming danger. Usually in respect to some kind of enormous slavering beast.

And I disagree: Belly of the Beast is far more terrifying than the 'Maw'. Harder to overcome too.
