I was, not often but I paid the occasional visit. And you do not know me either, I don't understand why people seem to think they know me personally here enough to use my name.

Well visit this thread and support halo wars.

I didn't read the prologue before, interesting.

Where did you guys read the first chapter? I heard it came out a while ago in an issue of OXM, but I looked a few times and came up with nothing.

Signatures are for squares.

Seems interesting. The rehabed spartan II thing is being more elaborated on which is great.

I have two complaints.

1. How as Arbiter on Sanghelios in January if he was still on Earth in March...

2. If this novel destroys Halsey's character I will be very, very, upset.

I had a feeling democracy... or something other than militarism, at least, would be brought back after Halo 3.

Got to say, I'm really looking forward to this. Humanity's place in the universe; that's what I find most wonderful about sci-fi. Sure, ancient alien cultures can be interesting, parasitic extra-galactic threats are menacing; at the end of the day though, to me good science fiction is science fiction that brings us back to that age old, relatable question:

"What is it to be human?"

It seems this novel will be exploring that a little. That makes me happy. Her writing style seems a little simplistic from the two chapters I've read so far, but she seems to have a good grasp on characters and dialogue, which can go a long way.

Writing style is simplistic or otherwise portrays characters in realastic manners. The stories themselves however are extremely complex. In fact, from what you just said, Karen is the perfect writer for you.

Note to everyone else: you need to pay attention in her books.

To answer your questions based upon my theory (which the book may elaborate on later since only two chapters and a prologue have been released)

1) I believe the Arbiter may have returned to Sanghelios in January, before attending the memorial in March to speak to the people of Sanghelios. It's obvious that those living on the planet have a strong hatred toward humanity still. He is looking to quell that on the homefront as he knows that the Sangheili that fought alongside the humans in battle are more sympathetic to the cause and the uneasy alliance.

The book should go further into detail about the events transpiring from January to March and may even touch on the day of rememberance in March, 2553. I see Thel's visit as top priority to defuse tensions before rallying the superiors of his society to engage in talks with the humans over ratifying the treaty.

2) I hope that Halsey's character remains strong as well. We shall see...

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

The emphasis on ODSTs makes me very happy.

That doesn't really make sense though.

For Thel to have gone back to Earth, he'd have had to go on the Shadow of Intent, that was the only Sangheili ship at Earth during the memorial service. Rtas says he wants to see Sanghelios again to know that it's safe, so what has he been doing in 2 months then? As Ship Master, Rtas would've picked up Thel from Sanghelios and taken him to Earth, yet Thel escaping from the wreckage of the Dawn on Earth and the memorial service happen in a very close time-frame, so he can't have gone back there.

So the book is flawed...

  • 10.12.2011 1:06 PM PDT

And Thel's comment makes it sound like he's heading back for the first time as well.

  • 10.12.2011 1:11 PM PDT

UNSC Infinity officially confirmed! :D

  • 10.12.2011 1:15 PM PDT

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Just a summary of my arguments.

Firstly, we've got a canonical problem here.

PRIVATE QUARTERS OF FORMER SHIPMASTER JUL 'MDAMA, BEKAN KEEP, MDAMA, SANGHELIOS: JANUARY 26, 2553 IN THE HUMAN CALENDAR.

...

"I don't have time for this," Jul said. "I have to go to the kaidon's assembly. The Arbiter's going to be here soon."

I was under the impression that the Arbiter returned to Sanghelios on March 3rd, 2553, after attending the memorial service on Earth. Rtas says that he wants to see Sanghelios, this implies that neither of them have seen their home planet for a while.

So how can Thel be on Sanghelios in January? That doesn't really make sense.

Now I've heard the argument that Thel landed on Earth and went back to Sanghelios and then back to Earth for the memorial service and then back to Sanghelios... No.

For Thel to have gone back to Earth, he'd have had to go on the Shadow of Intent, that was the only Sangheili ship at Earth during the memorial service. Rtas says he wants to see Sanghelios again to know that it's safe, so what has he been doing in 2 months then? As Ship Master, Rtas would've picked up Thel from Sanghelios and taken him to Earth, yet Thel escaping from the wreckage of the Dawn on Earth and the memorial service happen in a very close time-frame as we can see from the juxtaposed flashback at the end of Halo 3, so he can't have gone back there.

So the book is flawed...

My other complaint is the story itself. Thel and Lord Hood want to sign a peace treaty to ensure that there are peaceful relations between humanity and the Sangheili, and yet, Parangosky & ONI are quite content with causing MORE war and committing espionage against the Sangheili. So they're provoking a race that could be their potential and valuable ally... Okay...

u dumd ONI?

And then there's Halsey. I'm sorry but it just seems like Traviss doesn't quite understand her, we're seeing a completely different character here from what Nylund portrayed in TFOR, FS and GoO. And the worst part of it? It's all for the sake of drama because there's not much else going on in the Dyson Sphere, so there has to be a spontaneous character drama. Halsey doesn't really have any need or motivation to be resentful towards Mendez, she was on perfectly good terms with him in GoO when she knew he was involved in the S-III Project. Why has this suddenly changed? She's basically being demonised for no real reason.

I don't know... I'm not all that excited to be honest, everything I predicted seems to be coming true.

He returned from the ark in december.

My theory :

He returns to Sanghelios in December with Rtas and the rest. Then the ONI-Sangheili innies vs Thel conflict happens.Thel and his followers are victorious and go to Earth in March for the memorial and for a peace agreement with the UNSC.Rtas remarks that he wants to see Sanghelios back if it is safe from Telcam forces.

That's what i think will happen

BTW don't jump to fast into conclusion without reading the full book, 343 and Traviss aren't stupid.

Have faith :)

potential and valuable ally...

They don't even know how to repair their own ships. On top of that most of their race dislikes the humans.

Canon for 500, Alex.

I thought that there were ships that survived the Battle over the Ark? He could have had a battlecruiser take him to Sanghelios while the Shadow of Intent remained on station over Earth. Remember, everyone went through the portal but Chief and the Arbiter prior to them crashing on 04B in the Pelican.

My theory.
He may have returned earlier to Sanghellios. Seeing how they were in grave problem they needed help. Coming to the memorial may be dangerous due to the internal strife over the heresy of the arbiter.
Also as Sanghellios has hit by the nova bomb any loss in defense is a huge risk. Also maybe the arbiter left to Sanghelios to preach of his decision, while Rtas being a shipmaster was needed to help combat the last few covenant loyalist. To secure some peace for the Sangheili homeworld.
