The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Title for Reference.

For those of you who havent read it, here it is. And I would also recommend listening to some Halo OST while at it, it really accompanies it well. Listen to this while you read, or Reach's OST, as I did.

Anyways, on to business. I had a couple of questions I would liked answered if possible, and if not, some debate going on here.

Well, here they are:

In chapter two, it was said while Jul is talking to his wife Raia, that there were a few loyal Grunts, and even Brutes that could work as factory workers since the Huragok fled.

Okay, first things first, Brutes loyal to the Elites? I find this extremely odd, and the fact that they were not killed for simply being Brutes shows some mercy from the Elites that was previously unthinkable. Then what about the Huragok fleeing? To where? It seems odd as well since they simply dont care who they are helping as long as they fix something.

The other question is about this new Spartan, Naomi. I'm not sure, but I dont remember it being stated if she is a Spartan II or a Spartan III. My own logic would say she would be Spartan III since Parangosky has access to her for such a black op.

Anyways, that all for now. So far, I'm really liking Glasslands and am really looking forward to it's release and getting my hands on it. You can really tell it's not Nylund writing. The story seems fantastic so far. I really like that we're following ODST's again.

Anyways, what are your opinions on Glasslands so far?

Discuss.

It's likely that Naomi is actually SPARTAN-II since it mentioned that she is two meters tall, matching SPARTAN-II's average height. Also, they would have lied about actual number of SPARTAN-II survived during augmentation process. *winks* at ONI. ONI wanted some SPARTAN-II for their ops or whatever so...

Also, in legendary edition, it was mentioned about Dr Halsey commenting about actual numbers of SPARTAN-IIs surviving augmentation process. Or other way around, rehabilitation of crippled SPARTAN-IIs would have become full fledged SPARTAN-IIs in late of war to end of war.

Now, on Brutes being loyal to Elites? It doesn't make any sense at all.

She is a washed out spartan-II. (failed the augmentation process or something).

I am liking what I'm reading. There are a lot of storylines and viewpoints Traviss is covering, and they all interest me.

Though I will say that after reading cryptum, the relative simplicity of Traviss' writing style seems a little...basic? Not bad by any means, I like it all the same, but I'd make the comparison of Harry Potter vs LOTR books.

The washout is that other girl, the protege of Parangosky. Forgot her name.
Naomi is most likely a Spartan 2, judging by how she is described. Add to that: Vaz, the ODST immediatly recognizes her as a Spartan. Now, S3's generally weren't as intimidatingly large as S2's (due to them mostly being younger for instance). Also: the S3 program really was secret. I doubt many regular Marines, Navy or ODST personnel has ever seen, heard or even worked with a S3, apart from those who did so with Noble Team.

As for the Brutes: extremely odd!
I noticed that too in the other, bigger, thread about Glasslands. There really isn't a good explanation right now. If I have to speculate I'd say they're either prisoners of war, or decided to kiss the Elite's @$$es to save their own and backed out of the Covenant side as soon as they saw the Elite-Human alliance was going to win.

I also agree with the last point you make: Glasslands seems written a bit too....basic. And for me thats a huge dissapointment so far. It really goes wrong with the Elites for instance, who resemble insecure teens more than tough as nails noble warriors.
Opposed to that, she starts the chapter off in an incredibly annoying way: constantly switching between characters, or referring to them without us really knowing them which makes it very hard to follow who is who...

So far it seems less of a disaster I was expecting, but still: compared to Nylund's and Bear's work, this is pretty weak so far. I mean, they took a high profile writer to do this, and it doesn't seem to be anything better than what Staten did with Contact Harvest, which to me is the weakest entry in the series.
The focus on unlikable characters (Parangosky) and the rumoured conflicts between everybody still makes me a bit uneasy. Its still as if Traviss is kicking on presenting loads of drama while that doesn't really fit Halo.

Maybe the book will be decent or good, but it doesn't make want to buy it first day so far.

I am Field Master Avu Med 'Telcam, Servant of the Abiding Truth, and I have many brothers.

A god who creates tools is still a god. It is not for us to impose qualifications upon the divine or presume to guess its intentions.

That was not the only part I found odd regarding Travis' writing about the Sangheili. She also goes on to mention that one of the Kaidons arrived to the meeting in a human Warthog. WHAT? The Sangheili would never use human technology. Not in war, and especially not on their home planet.

I really hate people who search for war and this book is all about looking for war so far. (So I'm hoping it will show more of Lord Hoods and the Arbiters view.)

I find the storyline completely implausible. There is no way ONI would interfere with an Elite civil war straight after the massacre of their own species; let alone back enemy of your only real ally in the Elite society. There are only 200 million or so humans left! If the Elites turned on the humans, there would be nothing left.

It kinda annoys me to be honest.

One thing I'm liking is that fact that humans are incorporating Forerunner tech into their own. Makes you wonder what the weaponry is going to be like in Halo 4.

Colonies such as Minister, Lespai, etc would like to have a word with you.

Human population isn't 200 million left... it's estimated to be 1-2 billion left. If it was 200 million left, UNSC would be completely disspaited and Humanity would be back to stone age.

That's the figure given by the Halo 3 limited edition book. As far as I know, it hasn't been changed yet.

The only logical explanation, is that Halo 3's Limited/Legendary Bestiarium shows the figure of humans left on Earth, since other colonies were glassed or communications were severed as Parangosky stated.

Reach's OST is awful. Just dropped in to say that.

Regardless about population numbers, the real issue for me is that everybody seems to have forgotten about the Brutes. I mean seriously ONI is going to back a fundelmentalist faction in elite society to cause a civil war, while the Brutes could easily attack Earth at any point during this time period.

Hood himself says in Halo 3 that the fleet has been decimated by the loyalist fleets, how the hell are they going to defend Earth from attack with just six frigates???

what the hell is the military doing during this time? I would have thought they would be going into overtime to build more ships, train more troops etc etc. After a big war the first thing you do before anything else is to rebuild your army and yet ONI is playing with fire just 2 months after the war. WTF??? are they crazy?

They should be building relations at least with the elites and grunts or else scoping out what the hostile races are doing out there i.e. the Kig Yar, The Yamme, the remaining San'Shyuum and the Jiralhanae most of all. They are definitely not going to forget about Truth's death or the Ark any time soon, their going to be baying for blood for that defeat.

So far the novel has left me confused and annoyed than anything else.

How noble of you.

I would have preferred to have ODST's OST to listen, but I only have Reach's downloaded. It may not be the best, but there are good songs there.

and the fact they are going after the other Halos is worrying, IMO.

It is possible the Brutes are slaves, or smart enough to realize that they'd have no hope against the Elites and accepted defeat. Not all Brutes are the same. The Huragok fleeing is unknown (just as well as the Brutes are) but this is likely a writing device used by the author: bring up some "wtf?" questions early on to get the readers to keep reading for answers that will eventually come.

It was a battlefield trophy he took home with him; even Jul himself recognizes that the act of using our technology was strange and rediculous, but respected his fellow Kaidon's opinion. Not all Elites are the same, you know; some viewed us with high respect, as this Kaidon evidently did.

  • 10.13.2011 12:50 PM PDT

I found it strange that Traviss lists the Brutes as potential engineers without even mentioning the Drones. If you look at Contact: Harvest, the Brutes themselves used them as engineers before they acquired Lighter Than Some.

After getting the entire Elite council murdered by brutes... I find any being spared extremely unlikely.

Plus the thousands killed by the betrayal, and later the millions killed in the war against the Brutes. It just dosent compute, especially with how unforgiving the Elites are.

Or simply the fact the brutes have never been described as engineers/farmers :/...

It's like placing the nicest, kindest old man as a guard infront of a top secret nuke launch zone. Just doesn't work.

  • 10.13.2011 3:11 PM PDT

Just tossing around ideas. If anything, they're at least 8th class citizens as far as Elites are concerned, and are most likely forced to work.

  • 10.13.2011 6:48 PM PDT

I am a monument to all your sins

yeah the brute thing bugs me. It kind of makes me think that Travis doesnt really have a clear understanding of the nature of the Covenant Civil war. Ill wait until I read the whole book before passing judgement though.
