Polls inevitably kill threads. Reason? People come, read the OP, vote, and leave. No reply.
Here's my solution; make each 3 votes in a poll count as 1 reply (in terms of bringing the thread back to the top page).

Pretty simple really. Opinions?

Simpler Solution:
Don't make polls.

Eh, I guess. Perhaps the creator of the thread should include something to discuss along with the poll as-well.

That defies the entire purpose of my thread.

That's like saying; "Murderers kill people in their homes. Simple solution: leave your home.

EDIT-Well, I have to leave now. You guys can go on giving feedback.

I agree with this suggestion. Most polls die fairly quickly into the depths of the message board pages, and it usually does not depend on the content in the body text.

Wow. Murderers. Really? A bit dramatic right off the bat, don't you think?

My point stands however. If you know that by nature, polls inevitably kill themselves, why would you want to make one in the first place? They are narrow, and they don't particularly add to the discussion any more than a normal thread does. All polls do is provide a cheap way of gauging the feedback to an idea or an opinion, something that can be done just as easily by reading through your own thread.

Not to mention, allowing votes to bump threads give people the means to necrobump old threads without being able to be traced.

I like the idea, but it really wouldn't be necessary if the thread had good discussion value.

I still would like it, as it would be good for keeping poll counts up, but on fast moving forums it would still be shot down the pages before three votes could possibly be accumulated to bump it back up.

You bring up a great point.

However, referring to the suggestion the original poster made, it would require three votes to "bump" the thread up. The said user would have to log into three different Bungie.net accounts to successfully "necro-bump" a thread back to life. Though, your point still stands, and there is no way to track the said user.

That is a good point, but could it not be countered by after a certain amount of time without poll activity that the poll shuts down essentially, such as a poll in a locked thread, the results are seen, but you can't vote. I'd say maybe 5 days of inactivity of the thread and poll.

If the web team had to go through all that just to add this one idea, I'd rather see it in a site overhaul rather than a simple update.

Even simpler solution:
Don't let what other people do on an internet forum bother you.

If people want to make a poll, they'll make a poll. If they want to participate in it, they will. If you don't want to, don't.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I disagree.

Indeed. I do in fact recall Achronos stating that the forums and their scripts are incredibly touchy.

I hope Achronos does take this post into consideration for "The Next Big Thing", as well as possibly changing and rethinking polls.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I see some of your points on how this wouldn't work, and they're valid.

But if this was to be implemented, I'd imagine there'd be more thought put into it so that all issues would be cleaned up.

However, the chance of this getting implemented is about %0.001, so we don't have anything to worry about. :)

@Geegs30

Adding a poll to your post is a risk that you knowingly take. If your thread isn't interesting enough that people don't want to do anything more than vote, it's not deserving of staying at the top of the page. These are supposed to be discussion forums after all.

They can be traced, just not by moderators.

The idea of a poll is statistically based. It is their for members to vote what for instead of listing their decision in the thread. The OP should create polls only to get feedback (via voting) on a particular topic. In any case, you will always get people who would want to discuss the topic at hand.

Agreed. I can't remember ever seeing a poll that actually contributed anything useful.

I think another reason that poll threads seem to fall quickly is that many of them just kind of suck. A good thread needs some discussion value whether it has a poll or not.
