With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Could it be possible for a creator of a thread to lock/delete his own thread if it goes awry? There've been plenty of times where I've had threads that went way off-topic or were twisted in unacceptable ways, and it just seems like it would be easier to be able to lock my own threads once that happens, rather than waiting for one of the mods to see it.

No, because then you could lock arguments because they didn't go your way.

... Well... is there really anything wrong with that? Hypothetically, if I were to delete a thread of mine that went the wrong way (by my standards), then people who were having "fun" in the thread could just create a new one to their standards...?

You shouldn't be able to lock your threads if the discussion or arguement didn't go your way. Good discussion needs some controversy, not just agreements.

Well that's not really what I was referring to. I meant more along the lines of this example:

Person 1: Hey, how about them yankees?

Person 2: OMG DID YOU SEE THAT I TOTALLY PWNT THAT NOOBZORZ ON XBL LAST NIGHT. FOO TRIED USE THE 'COMBO BUT I TOLDS HIM TO SHOVES IT LOLZ!

"get out of my thread recon or I will lock it."

You can just see people saying that.

o well, I'm sure Recon would lock it for them.

While I can understand the desire, I think that it's not a feature that would be valuable.

Part of the reason that I would lean towards "no thanks" is that I've come to see a division in perception when it comes to threads.

Many people are of the opinion that if they create a thread that they "own" it. Not everyone does, and it varies as to degrees of "ownership". I have seen people be rude to other members and post things like "If you don't agree with me get out of MY thread!".

Now, I do agree that thread creators do have some responsibility. In many cases, they can help guide and steer conversation, not by directly telling people what to do, but by their involvement and interaction on the active discussion.

But the fact is that as soon as anyone hits the "submit" button, that thread is not theirs, it is Bungie's and the communities. Bungie really owns it, and is granting equal access to all members.

I know that there is (and can be) a measure of pride in creating a large, popular, successful or even a stickied thread. It's not a bad thing, and it is human nature. But that sense of "ownership" does have its drawbacks. Just look at how many repeat topics we have in the various forums. I think that is partly the lack of a search feature, even more a matter of laziness, and mostly a matter of someone's ego wanting to see "their thread" on the page instead of "adding their post to someone else's thread" which I guess is somehow not as desirable.

Shai, I am not accusing you (or anyone in particular) of that, but to some degree or another, we all do it. Giving topic creators the ability to lock would further reinforce that feeling of "ownership" and I would be concerned that we would have a lot more of "get out of my thread" and other territorial pissing contests.

... Get out of my thread :-P

Just joking. But I do understand where you are coming from, and perhaps you are right. I am, once again, overestimating the maturity level of forum members as a whole. There would be too many people who would abuse such a privilage.

That shouldn't even be how you deal with spammer/trollers, just ignore em and they'll stop or go away. Quickly resorting to locking your own thread is a pretty bad choice or dececsion(sp?) on your part. Anyways enough brown nosing, that's my opinion.

Edit: What these forums really need our Spellcheck in our posts, before we submit. Like the chapter News Stories, Announcements, etc.. have.

Gawd, the servers would slow to a crawl having to check everyone's spelling before they post. Especially with the amount of laziness, purposeful misspellings, and l337-speak that occurs in these forums

He means as in debates. People are allowed to have opinions on these forums, most of them have no way to successfully argue them without resorting to childish flaming. Say, for example, somebody wants to discuss who the greatest guitar player of all time is, but another person comes along with strongly-supported evidence that there's a better one - chances are that, unless that person displays a level of maturity far above the average on these forums, they'll just hit lock.

If they lock, so be it... The person already made their winning statement, and everyone else loses the topic starter's respect for his/her opinions... People will just stop replying to their threads, and they will have left in the dust as they should... If people want to shoot theirselves in the foot, let them, in this case natural selection is A.O.K.

There's more potential havok with a moderator locking a topic and generally with a provokative statement, than people just not replying to their threads, and just let them die off the forum or improve... You can't change a person, but a person can change theirself.

Though I wouldn't support topic deleting, because that would mean people deleting threads to avoid moderator consequences.
