13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

So I was browsing the forums when I came across a thread that mentioned something known as "The Ultra-Ban," and I was curious as to what could possibly authorize it's effects to be placed on a user.

This was a picture of said "Ultra-Ban,"

What would you have to do to get this?

ATTENTION MODERATORS. My latest ban (14-day ban from Qbix89) is not legitimate, take a look for yourself. Please review this before considering me a "repeat offender". Thank you.

That's technically an IP ban. I think only administrators have the ability to issue those.

I think only serious violations would warrant one, such as conducting illegal activity on the website.

Winner of the 2012 Lurker of the Year award.

I'm watching you.

I can think of a few reasons such as, but not limited to, giving out other people's personal information or other serious misuses of information.

How is that an IP ban? It is saying that you aren't allowed to access the site on a specific username... IP bans can be easily dodged.

But that would then imply that the "ultra ban" is weaker than an IP ban. You would only have to access Bungie.net via another user account.

If a violation was serious enough to warrant a ban like this, I'm sure it wouldn't be limited to an account.

Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong and Bungie decided to create a ban that keeps a specific user from accessing all areas of the website instead of just the public forums.

IP bans are 100% useless. So, I don't know what you're talking about.

  • 10.15.2011 12:43 PM PDT

Perhaps hacking, or something else quite serious.

IP bans are not completely useless. That's a fact.

They are, however, avoidable by different means, depending on how your connection is set up.

Plenty of websites with message boards use IP bans. If they are "100% useless", then why are they still used to this day?

IP bans can be dodged very easily. Also, you risk banning a lot more people than originally intended when using one.

I can give an example of an ultra-ban worthy offense. Back when you could only unlock the blue flames via the iPhone a user 'out of the kindness of their heart' was offering to unlock them for members of the forum. To do this they required their login information. Permabanning them would not have disabled access to their inbox, to prevent them retrieving this personal information. An ultraban prevents access to anything on bungie.net.

Only superusers as far as I am aware.

Because the average Joe doesn't know how to change his IP.

Child -blam!- is a great way to get permabanned.

If this is the state of my art, then I secede.

I know a dude that got ultra-banned. Achronos let him make an alt after the fact.

Yeah, figure that one out.

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

You must do something really serious.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

It might also come in handy dealing with people who abuse the file share or the tagging system for it. There have been a few cases of rather serious abuse where I could imagine it being used. (Since a forum ban wouldn't affect your fileshare abilities.)

I went outside today. The graphics were AMAZING. The gameplay WASN"T.

Maybe I should cry for help
Maybe I should kill myself
Blame it on my ADD baby

I've known several people to get one for phishing, posting other peoples account info and other general bad behaviour.
