Well, in Delta's favor, we don't know how strong those bayonet chainsaws are. I mean, in Gears of War 2 Skorge used his dual chainsaw staff to cut in two a tank...
But that was not made of Mjolnir-grade metal. I believe Chief fell out of orbit in the beginning of Halo 3, in 2,000 lbs of metal plus the force of gravity pulling him down to the ground, and the metal was still able to survive it. Even if his armor weren't locked, it still would have more of a chance of surviving than Dizzy's rig. Unless the Gears chainsaws are capable of producing over, say, the equivalent of 10,000 lbs of force onto the Mjolnir armor, it probably would'nt damage the armor.
He used a door made of Forerunner metal as a heatshield, I am fairly certain that had he not have it he would have died.
If you would read the books you wouldve known that the main problem was the plasma which hits anything when falling into atmosphere.
Heck,A starship flying that fast would burn to pieces if it would fall down that fast into atmosphere.
What does Plasma has to do with this discussion? Anyways, back on topic...
It doesn't matter if the armor can withstand the blast if the user itself is damaged regardless, so something like a grenade launcher (or a Fuel Rod as evidenced by Will) could pretty much kill the user without destroying the armor.
If Delta can get a Boomshot or any other type of ordnance like that (Digger, Torque Bow, Hammer of Dawn, Mortar, Grenade) then John's armor will serve for nothing more than a furnace/oven.
