I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

Does anyone recall a Bungie employee ever establishing the actual six-tone progression of the olly-olly-oxen-free code between the Spartan-IIs? It's rare that they share relatively mundane background information like this, but they did share tidbits at points in the past, and I was wondering if anyone can recall whether this little tidbit was ever established.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Well, it's been used at least three times in the novels, so I guess it could be accepted as evidence to support it.

Although I cant recall a Bungie Employee ever saying something about it.

I'm not sure I understand this. Maybe my question wasn't clear.

I'm wondering whether or not a Bungie has ever been asked if the six-toned whistle that represented their code phrase was actually established, meaning employees who are familiar with that lore could actually recite the whistle to someone from memory.

I'm sure it'd be a difficult fact to track down, as it would likely have been said, if anywhere, at a booth or panel as per fan questions, but I figured if anyone had a clue, it'd be the members of this particular forum.

I'm pretty sure they can... you realize that Bungie didn't invent olly-olly-oxen-free right?

Read the Halo Novels, then come back.

OP: I'm pretty sure it was established by one of the authors of the novels, not a Bungie member.

Ohh, okay, I understand now. You mean if it actually exists IRL. We only know that it exists but we have no idea what the notes actually are nor what they sound like.

I highly doubt the actual tone exists. That I can recall, it has never been performed by anyone. It would be a great question to bring up during a book/game conference.

Listen to the audio books. They have the tone. When the guy says it its sort of sing songy and always is the same so... I would guess that thats how it goes

We should know better, because we are better.

I think it is an ascending tone like do-re-mi-fa-so-la, or something along those lines. I don't think it has ever been established.

Generalizations.
Helping idiots hate other idiots since people have existed.

I think you are asking if Bungie created Olly-Olly-Oxen-Free ?
If so....

Olly Olly Oxen Free has been around for a very long time. We used it when playing Hide & Seek as kids. There was a 1978 film with that as its title. So Bungie definitely didn't make it up themselves.

History is written in blood, yet are battles really lost on the battlefield? Canst thou tell me where thou comest, and where thou goest, and what is, or what was, or what will be? For everything remains, AS IT NEVER WAS."

I think (using the do-re-mi-fa-so-la-te-da tone scale) that it would be do-re-do-re-la-so-so

I'm well aware that Bungie did not invent the phrase. I'm also well aware that they didn't implement it into their fictional universe; Nylund did that.

As another user said, I was asking whether or not the six-toned whistle that the Spartans used as a code between one another was actually ever established as a tonal progression in real life by the caretakers of the Halo lore at some point in the past. I imagined it to be something that may have been asked or discussed at a convention or panel, if anything, and thus, very difficult information to find.

So, yeah, whether or not the tone-specific whistle actually had six, specific notes assigned to it, or whether it was never explored, even within the walls of Bungie HQ (or Nylund's mind).

In either case, it would be a fun question at a convention booth to ask.

Seek The Truth
Behold The Truth
Reveal The Truth
That is The Law and The Whole of The Law

Now, I know that this may seem silly, but what about "E B D C# A B", the theme for the Halo 3 E3 '06 trailer. It fits the number of notes, and sounds epic to boot. Just listen to the piece at 1:07 to hear it, loud and clear.

Dunno, Hasty, that makes it seem too "sing-song."

Oh, so THAT'S why they quoted TFOR a zillion times in Halo 3.

It's not that they don't like them, they just wanted to stay separate from them, which is really unfortunate. I think H2/3 could've been much better with Linda, Kelly, Fred, Will, and Halsey.

  • 10.19.2011 3:33 AM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

I'd assume it's the same as the real world counterpart on which it is based.

How would they have gotten out of the Micro Dyson sphere, though?

I'm assuming he's just talking about the concept of them being in the games to begin with instead of having been bottle-necked to the context of the novels.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

All I know is that they say it in the novels.
