Meh, it's nothing compared to CE, 2 or ODST. Halo 3 was a pretty piss-poor "conclusion", and there were so many cringey moments.

"To war..."

And why isnt Reach in the poll?

It's not worthy of the title of Halo. Worst campaign ever. Of all time...

This.

CE and 2 were the glory days.

ODST was the true return to CE (AR esque start but with scope and bigger magazine, Pistol was fast, had scope, and had recoil instead of stupid bloom, allies were actually useful and fun to fight with (unlike Noble Team), lots of epic moments that weren't overdone/miniscule).

And Kikowani Station Mission Start was like Two Betrayals.

H3 was the beginning of the end and Reach was the end. Both signified the end of Bungie's open world style gameplay (CE's Halo, H2's Delta Halo, Metropolis, Outskirts, ODST's Mombassa Streets). H3 and Reach became like all those other shooters:

Go here, do this. Go there, do that.

No you can't go over there. Just follow this path and no one gets hurt. No don't look at that. Just stay on the -blam!- path.

Why not stop by my File Share while you're here?

~Long Live Halo 2
Only regret is I didn't play more of it.

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm sort of a jerk.

I still play Halo 2's campaign to this day.

Beautifully put.

CE, 2 and ODST encouraged you to explore the environment you were in, you felt immersed in the world you were in because it was there in front of you and free to explore. Halo 3 and Reach were all about the things you saw OUTSIDE the playing area, this is a pretty major thing, we (as the player) are completely seperated from the actual battle going on and are restricted to a single area we have to clear out in order to press a switch.

But in CE, 2 and ODST you were constantly on the move for your objectives with freedom of choice and direction. A perfect example would be the second mission of CE, you have a clear objective, find the Marines who have just landed on the Ring to regroup a fighting force. Ont he way, you're treated to massive skirmishes but they do not impede exploration and it really feels like an open world environment.

Same thing with Uplift Reserve and Mombasa Streets. These are true Halo levels, these are what make the campaign so replayable and fun, there's always something to do or something you might have missed on the various paths you can go. But in H3 and Reach, it's very much a secular experience where you're put on a path and have to follow it through to accomplish a boring objective that just involves pushing a switch...

Halo 3, it wrapped things up nicely. Sadly H2 ended abrupty b/c they ran outta time and it could ahve been better :/

Why no Halo Wars and Halo: Reach???

"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

Personally, I liked Halo 3's the most, but everyone here has some valid points. Halo 3 didn't allow as much exploration, but I felt that the combat was the most intense, and quite a few of the set pieces were incredibly impressive (i.e. the dual Scarabs, Flood High Charity, even Sierra 117's environment was amazing, though it's a pity you couldn't explore). Halo CE had a fantastic campaign, but the Library was possibly my least favorite mission in any Halo game, ever. Not only was it incredibly repetive, to the point where I wondered if I was actually making any progress, but the same formula pervaded the entire mission: Fire Shotgun, watch out for the next flood drop in the EXACT SAME AREA AS THE PREVIOUS STORY OF THE LIBRARY. Other than that, CE had a truly excellent campaign. ODST and Halo 2 are tied in my book, because they were both wonderful games as well, but I bought Halo 2 and Halo 3 at the same time, so Halo 2 led directly to a sequel with massively improved systems. ODST had a wildly different take on Halo storytelling, while maintaining good gameplal. I would vote for all of them if I could!

Reach isn't Halo for starters. Halo Wars I guess could count but I think this is a poll for the fps halo campaigns

But I can play CE, 2 and ODST, which aren't linear and I can feel like I'm in an actual battle...

ODST? Pfft, it was a good game, but the storyline?

I mean, out in the galaxy, master chief is on forerunner structures fighting for the survival of the human race and earth, and yet we are supposed to care about 6 random ODSTS who coincidentally happen to crash land in Mombasa? I think the Battle of Earth could have been told in a much better way than this, it jet seemed like too much of a sudden turn, from a trilogy about our survival to 6 randomers

But gameplay is good though.

Looks like the entire point of ODST flew right over your head.

ODST was a story that did away with the grandeur and spectacle of the trilogy and told a more secular and human story. Then you've got Sadie's Story, which is one of the best things ever done in Halo, playing a significant role in the underlying themes of ODST and establishing the way the Covenant affected humanity in a way that didn't just involve shooting. This was pulled off perfectly from the way it was inspired by Dante's Inferno.

They didn't "happen" to crash land in Mombasa, that was their mission.

ODST was a piece of storytelling genius, the film-noir aspects of it were done brilliantly.

I think Sadies story was quite good but I just think that the battle of earth could have been told from a slightly more general view, maybe if you played as different soldiers each time who never have contact with each other as they are in different parts of the city fighting different battles, and build up a story telling the vents that happned during this battle

Thanks!

I'll be getting ODST soon.

Agreed. the levels Uplift Reserve, Mombassa Streets, Tayari Plaza, and Kikowani Station have promise.

Even the illusion of open world exploration is better than the obvious restrictions in Halo 3 and Reach, notably on Tsavo Highway and LNoS mission start, where there are barriers that are simply conspicuous. It's abominable.
