When we were first introduced to the sentinel, they were allies, the sentinels only turned on master chief because the he decieded that he wasn't going to participate in the utter anhialation of every race in the entire galaxy, in fact he would try to stop it by any means necessary and would succeed in doing so, so that's something to take into consideration. Also, if you noticed in Halo 2, neither of the moniters nor the sentinels posed any threat to the humans. IMO, the humans aren't the forerunners per say, but I think they're descendants of the forerunners, so technically they couldn't have created the rings or the sentinels for that matter. And the idea that the heretics were descendants of the forerunners is ridiculous. They were just a rag-tag band of elites and grunts who no longer followed the Covenant's popularly held belief that the forerunners were gods since they were "enlightened" by 343 guilty spark of halo's true purpose.
I also somewhat agree with mr. tactics about the forerunners being a humanoid alien. Some sort of alien race that looks similar to humanity, while not actually being related to humanity. I say this beacause in the first book in the Halo franchise, the humans translated a covenant message which said that humanity was an affront to their gods. For those of you with a limited vocabulary, the word affront means to insult, offend, or to defy. If this is the case, then I don't understand how the monitors didn't pick that up by now, especially after the chief obliterated the last halo.
These are just two possible theories that i could come up with.
