O_O you looked at your friends balls when "he" sat on your head O_o

do you think there should be a language filter on bungie.net? I have friends in morocco who love halo and would gladly sign up for an account but they wouldnt know what ppl are saying, but if we had a language filter, English could be transferred to that person's language and vice versa. IT would expand or frontiers and i think it would be a great aspect. What do you people think fo the Pros and Cons of this idea? Please be kind enough to share with me and the rest of the community. Thank you

by filter you mean translator? That would be a neat feature...but I don't know if it would be done. I mean I am sure there is a way for Achronos to do it, but I don't know whether it would benefit B.net? Not sure, good idea though.

With all the misspelling and "1337 speak" most members do, a lot of the translations would come through very scrambled, confusing, and just plain half-baked.

But if your friends really need a translator, I suggest Babelfish. Although the point above must strongly be kept in mind.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

That's an extremely hard task... They could use Babelfish for now, but even that is severely flawed. I doubt Bungie will spend the time to make one. Too hard, and the finished product isn't usually that great, as far as translators go.

well, i think that it would be easier for a guy in france to read stuff in french, and most ppl who are worth talkin to are not 1337 speakers so it would be easier, it would still make it easier in general though, even with all the 1337 stuff

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

The people here can barely make their english understandable... I'd hate to see what would happen after it's been translated...

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

The problem is that the French (or other language) that would be translated would end up being translated poorly in many cases. As many have noted before, you can use a single phrase, pass it through several different translators, and get more than one translation, though they are all technically correct.

It's just far too much work.

Problem A:
* Auto-translation software is never 100% sucessful. There are implied meanings, phrases, sarcasm, and other language constructs that do not directly translate in any language.

Problem B:
* Rampant slang, lack of punctuation, usage of leet...all of this would make a forum indecipherable to both a foreigner or a translator.

I would seriously doubt it would ever come to pass from Bungie.net directly, but try out a few of the online translation sites, and find the one that works the best for you, do the whole page translation. I like WorldLingo better than Altavista myself, but they should at least do a halfway adequate translation.

But, If they are learning English, it would be best for them to simply jump in.

Wouldn't work to well. Most automatic translators on the web are terrible, unless you're speaking the extreme basics of a language...like:

I am going to the store. I like cats. I like Halo...etc.

As TazmanianDude said, people (mostly) don't speak in a very translator-friendly way... There is a lot of mis-spelling, bad grammar, sentence fragments, unknown words etc.

I think that the cons would outweigh the pros, unfortunately.

Most translators are crap too.

Take an english sentance, any in this page will do.

Translate it to french,
immediately translate it back to english
(Like so)
----------------
La plupart des traducteurs sont des foutaises aussi.

Prendre un sentance anglais, n'importe quel dans cette page fera.

Le traduire au français, tout de suite traduire le soutient à l'anglais

---------
Most of the translators are foutaises also.

Take an English, any sentance in this page will do.

To translate it to the French, right away translate the supports to the English
