the problem with Halo 3 was not graphics, it was a cheesy aesthetic. melees look week, guns looked and sounded week, and many of them were redundant.
the game looked great, until you started playing it.
No, people thought they were redundant because they never used them, didn't use them right, sucked, or just couldn't beat the overpowered BR in most cases.
the SMG, spiker, PR, and AR all pretty much served the same purpose. stafe and spray or melee rush. the AR however could be used at a range if you were really good with it.
I really wish they solidified the function and aesthetics of a small weapons sandbox than pack it full with silly and redundant ones.
Halo reach actually did a lot right the close range weapons. The needler effectiveness is dependent and the skill of the user, even with the outrageous amount of auto aim it has, the plasma pistol is perfect. and the grenade launcher takes more skill than the SPNKER.
although Halo 3 is still better than CoD, BF, and any modern war game when it come to characterizing its weapons.
