Subject: Timestamps should show relative time instead

I think it would be much more useful if the site showed how long ago an event occurred in addition to, or instead of, the timestamp for an event as it exists currently.

I've always found that they [the timestamps] don't carry a lot of meaning for users who live outside of the same time zone that bungie.net is set to. I've also heard that it's difficult (for whatever reason) for the site to cater to people in different time zones because of the offset values, daylight savings, etc... I figured the next best thing would be something that is slightly more meaningful for everyone.

So, instead of:

There's a multitude of other places something like this could be added in as well.

Thoughts?

I never thought of this, sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Because I'm in the Pacific timezone, I never realized that other users around the world would see a foreign time stamp.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

I learned about a hour after first coming here that I just need to add 3 to every time value I see. Pretty habitual now.

Why replace the current system if we could just have both?

  • 10.21.2011 11:02 PM PDT

Yeah, I think this would be much better.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Perhaps he is proposing having the option to change between settings.

Although then again I am not him. I think.

I agree, do away with the timestamp.

Why not have both (the time it was posted and how long ago it was posted).

ex. last reply by Spartan 11117 2 on 10.21.2011 10:03 PM (45 minutes ago)

Edit: My first post was two very unconnected paragraphs. When I get tired my mind starts to wander...

I've never really found it too difficult to work out the times in my head, but for those that see it as a problem, it could help.

I'm not all for killing the timestamp completely; perhaps after a full 24 hours it would revert to the actual time of postage? Also, I agree with Duardo that the date should definitely stay.

  • 10.21.2011 11:32 PM PDT

I really like the idea of having this, I think it would be pretty helpful.

I live on the west coast... Never have issues with the time.

I always hate that, though. Look at facebook, for instance. Everything says 'posted a few days ago' or 'posted an hour ago'.

I think the date/time would take up less space and give more info.

Oh. I thought you meant something along the lines of the poster's actual time and location. >_<

The first one is completely useless for any events older than 24 hours (and that's assuming it only shows up on events that have occurred within the last 24 hours). The second at least gives you a hint to how recently the event occurred (which doesn't have to be a word for the number, by the way).

I also disagree with including both the full timestamp along with recent it was (ie. 10.21.2011 10:03 PM | 45 mins ago). With the current format of the thread listing, I think that would look far too crowded in such a small space.

Yes please. And just put the date/time as roll-over text.

I think it would be much more useful if timestamps were displayed in the browser's local time using a little javascript slight of hand.

Of course, sometimes things like that get cut from feature work.

I just learned that there are two types of double cheeseburgers at McDonalds the other day.

The Double Cheeseburger is 1.49; The burger has 2 beef patties, 2 slices of cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard.

The McDouble, however, has only 1 slice of cheese and is 99 cents.

The more you know!

I think the date/time would take up less space and give more info.
