Subject: I'd actually like to see more Religioin / Political threads

ooga booga boooh

Over my time here on B.net, there has been one thing, and one thing only that has never bored me: The Flood. Each and every time I come here, I love seeing some of the humorous, witty threads created. But in the past year, The Flood, as a whole, has diverted from the spamming and excessive trolling to a more mature, somewhat intelligent section of the forum here.

Most recently, the situation in the Middle East, Occupy Wall St. and other social and political situations be tackled in a well behaved fashion. Maybe it is because the actual forum users themselves are getting older, or maybe there are new users who are more respectable, but I believe The Flood may be ready for political and or religious discussion.

I am not saying all topics on the subject should be allowed. For instance "I hate the NDP party of Canada", or "I don't even like Obama" would obviously not be acceptable subjects. However, there are some threads that tackle nearly all aspects of politics in many different manners, and 50 pages later stay on topic, well behaved. While the thread was based around social and economical issues, it also dealt a lot with governance, and people's personal opinions on many different matters.

I have even noticed some of the moderators partaking in what is regarded as "not allowed" discussion, and only locking if the topic becomes out of hand. So, is there any chance we may see some more leniency in The Flood on religious and / or political topics? Again, I don't believe it should all be allowed, but I've noticed the forum has been very well behaved considering what it was like when I first joined here.

I'd say political threads should be allowed to a certain extent, but religious threads seem like there would be more flaming/trolling than actual discussion.

Most of the Flood are actually mature and do post accordingly, I would know, because I am a Flood frequent. It is only the few that cause the Flood Forum to be thought of as troll-infested and full of idiocy. One or two people tend to mess up and derail the thread causing everyone to loose their chance at a mature discussion.

As long as there are those few, that will always be there, the current system should remain.

To use the old adage: "Everyone wants what they can't have."

Political discussions are the proverbial apple on the tree in Eden. OP's of threads made specifically to get political are the snake, coaxing us to participate in the forbidden ritual that is eating the apple (participating in the thread in a political manner). Whether or not we choose to be Adam or to be Eve is our own choice, though the one with the benefit is to be Eve. It's easier to be Adam, but more fun to be Eve.

If they outlawed, say, talks about the business world. Discussing global economies and companies from a business/marketing standpoint. People would make threads about this, just like they do about politics and religion. It would start off talking about why Bungie "gave up halo" (even though they didn't), and it would spiral into a discussion of the basic structure of Microsoft as a company who has to meet the needs and wants of their customers by providing good, dependable gaming experiences.

The thread would then get locked on the 50th+ page; Lather, rinse, repeat.

I do not see a problem with political threads, but I can hear a storm with permitting religious threads...

Only after we ban Bricypoo.

From my experience in private chapters, religious discussion ends badly A LOT. People get very offended if they get told something they have been raised on is a "lie". If someone disagrees they usually get very offended about it.

I enjoy religious discussion but I don't see it ending very well in the flood forum. There would be threads like "If you believe in God you are a idiot" "If you don't believe in Evolution you are a idiot" "If you don't have the same opinion as me you are a idiot" exc. It would not end well

Which is precisely why not all threads under the subject of religion should be allowed, because for one do not think they should as well. To even mention the word Christmas, for example, is entering the world of religious discussion. Otherwise we'd say holiday season. I've seen some great discussion of religion, even so simple as "Do you go to church?" People just spoke of them going or not going, why and why not, then went to the next brony thread.

Cute how you actually used a religious metaphor to attempt to prove your point, don't you agree? Anyways, you're point on economics is purely based on hypotheticals, rather than any sort of actualities. And this is not about wanting what we can't have. I can't be a mod, doesn't mean I want it. This is more about a little leniency, even if we just start with a little bit of politics here and there. Nothing major.

However, it was a religious reference and not a religious thread nor a religious discussion. Quite a difference, and the one I used is not against the rules.

What the -blam!- are you prattling on about? That people want to talk about a topic is obvious; people talk, that's what people do. Do you have anything to contribute on whether people should be allowed to talk? That's the question, here.

People are going to continue to -blam!- about this topic until it's changed, if it changes. If it isn't political discussions, it's another thing. All I'm saying that if this changes something else will take its place. And, it's more than likely that people will not talk about it nearly as much.

Most of the talk about it now is about how we can't talk about it. I honestly have no idea why, if people are so inclined to discuss it with other mature people, why people don't start a group to discuss it. It would keep out those who aren't mature enough to discuss it with a manner that the group deems fitting. It would be better than doing it in the public forums anyway.

I would also like to note that you contributed absolutely nothing to the conversation, either.

Is this a joke?

If you'd like, i could totally go in there right now and link over 25 active threads with completely ridiculous content, all of which is rule breaking and posted by different members [not just the same guy breaking the rules over and over again]...

I fully disagree. All other sites that I go too, I don't see any mature conversations about religion or politics. There are always those people that are "always right" and refuse to have any honest debate about it. Instead of people being respectful of other people's decisions, everyone gets pitted against each other to take sides on religion and politics. I feel this would deteriorate the overall feel the the b.net community. If you truly want to discuss these things, that is what private groups are for.

Not having religion and political debates on the main forums is one of the main reasons Bungie.net is so appealing.

Why would people want to come here and talk about this? This is a video game forum. If people want to have these types of discussions then they should look else where. Or has has already been suggested, make a private group for it.

Join a private group that allows for those kinds of discussion. I also think it is funny that you're looking for this type of conversation on a forum mostly inhabited by teenagers. Most of them have no idea what they're saying, rather they just repeat something they've heard somewhere else.

Don't know about religion-it's a far more sensitive issue than politics. Never really understood why political discussion wasn't allowed anyway.

obviously it's against the rules. That's what the whole thread is about, whether or not it should be against the rules. You obviously just read the title of the thread and responded.

Personally, I am not easily offended when someone disagrees with my religious or political affiliation, but to me B.net is not the place for those types of discussions. Why anyone would want to come here to discuss religion or politics is beyond me. If these matters are important or interesting to you talk with your family and friends or go to your place of worship.

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

There is really nothing to be said that hasn't already been said so I'll just put myself on a side in this argument.

We should not be able to talk politics and religion in the Flood.
