Yes, it's true. I am making a FULL Halo 2 mod for CE. Yes, a gigantic project to undertake. And I'm all releasing it for free. Yes, the weapons are going to be more accurate than the Halo 2 CE Mulitplayer maps. Yes there will be single player, and yes there will even be a fully-customized Halo 2 UI and game lobby. Now. I need your help. As I write this I am starting a new site for the mod, where you can sign up there.

I need:

Experienced 3DS Max Modellers
VERY Experienced Texturers
Good Level-Makers
Voice Actors
Halo Lore (For new multiplayer Maps)
And lots of dedicated fans that want to see a full-copy of Halo 2 for the XP. It's not gonna be the same as Microsoft's copy, annd will run on the original Halo CE engine, which is avaliable for download here. You also need a copy of the Halo Editing Kit, which can be downloaded here

Though this may just be another dead cause, I wish you luck. I would help but I don't know much about computers. I don't even know how to make custom maps (not that it matters cause i have no imagination to think of a cool map).

This has been done already. A group of experienced modders got together and made the Halo 2 maps (Coagulation, Zanzibar, New Mombassa, etc.) complete with dual wielding and all. It took them months to complete each map.
It would be better to wait for Halo2Vista to come out and then organize a group to create stuff using the new tools etc.

If you spend the time you would be working on creating this working at a job earning money you will be able to buy the PC and Vista to run Halo 2. Think about it.

Well, of course Iggwilv, chances are Widowmaker already knows about the Halo 2 CE maps that are out there (because if he doesn't I'm going to laugh and never let him live this down). This project is specifically for creating a Halo 2 for XP. There's a difference between making mod maps and making an entire conversion.

Though this may just be another dead cause, I wish you luck. Yeah, me too.

Of course I know Kim! Lol. Yes, the H2CE maps are just multiplayer maps. They were cool, and I respect those guys, but what I'm doing is actually making a carbon copy of the original Halo 2 except on the CE engine.

Do you honestly believe that you will be able to:

A. Build the entire Halo2 campaign for CE faster then they will port it to Vista.

and more importantly,

B. Bungie/Microsoft will let you release a carbon copy of Halo 2 if you do manage to pull off A.

anyways, I'l be really impressed if you could make that work. Undertaking such a huge project like that AND actually finishing isn't impossible, I mean just look at some of the mods for other games, and how big they are. Best example would probably be the ut2k4 mod red orchestra. So, good luck at making it work!

I agree. It's possible, I'm just saying I have my doubts. But Red Orchestra had some seriously skilled people working on it. I know someone who worked on the project, who also worked on the Vietnam Glory Obscured modification for C&C Generals: Zero Hour, and he worked on some professional-grade stuff there.

But seriously. Reidypea, LOL. Iggwilv is right. Halo and Halo 2 may both use the Havok engine, but seriously, it's probably too big of an undertaking for just you and a group of people.

Yeah...sorry to be a wet blanket here, but I've been around this place for a year and some more, and I've seen this type of project rise and fall. So I hate to dampen your spirits, but you might want to reconsider and aim a tad lower than recreating the entire game from scratch.

You're proposing to build an entire game in your free time from scratch, and make it better than a game that took a fully-financed company years to do. This includes acting, scripting, dialogue, etc, etc. What exactly are you going to offer through this game that the upcoming H2PC won't offer? What exactly will make people want to download your game?

As mentioned, modders recreating only the multiplayer maps took months to complete each one, and you're planning to recreate an entire game and make it better than others.

Hate to get you down, but you might have to consider it realisticly.

Oh, and Nitronia? Make sure you know what you're talking about before laying claim to your hacking skills.

Sorry for the double post. But to clear a few things up...and I'm deeply sorry if any of this offends anyone, please realize it was meant as a gentle rebuttal, not as a flame.

Voice Actors: He means how exactly you will get voice actors to play the cutscenes and the various bits and pieces of dialogue in the real game.

Limitations of the Engine: Er...nitronia? Do you know exactly what he's talking about? He's talking about the physical restrictions of the H1PC engine that the H1CE is based on. Example: The banshee in H2PC has a barrel-roll ability...how will that be implemented?

Rankings, Etc: How new the post is shouldn't have any impact on the planned direction. And again, according to the H1PC/CE engine, that stuff is wishful thinking.

CE?: Yeah, its made for CE. Before you sign up for this project, Nitronia, I would knowing what CE is to begin with. Besides, if he doesn't make it for CE, what would he make it for? There would be no other way for the mod to run.

...yeah. Again, sorry to be such a wet blanket, but think about it. You've got individual AI for each of your enemies. Elites act completely differently from Grunts, both of whom act completely differently from Flood. Add on the other creatures Bungie put into their game...brutes, specop elites, prophets, those bug thingys that I cant name off the top of my head...each with its own AI. Add on the Donkey Kong's (people who have played through H2 will know what I'm mentioning) own individual AI and programming. Then you've got other things like dual wielding. In this case, the H1PC engine simply can't simulate actual dual wielding. There's no way to. The mods in H2CE trick the player into thinking it's two guns, but the engine itself views it as a single weapon.

How bout seeting your sights on something a little less... lofty. One map at a time. Do the first level, then move on if you want. I can tell you, making a SP map is hard as hell. If you want advice, you can ask me, but I don't want to commit anything right now because of time constraints.
