ok so I went to task manager to close out some things that are running so that I can improve halo's performance. I chose aim.exe to end the process, and when I hit "end process" it says: "WARNING: Terminating a process can cause undesired results including loss of data and system instability. The process will not be given the chance to save its stare or data before it is terminated. Are you sure you want to terminate the process?" I saved my buddy list, so should I hit yes? and this goes for every other process

Here you will need this to help you get your foot out of the back of your throat, looks llike its in there pretty deep. And what is that on your face? Egg?! *hands Kim a washcloth*

the last thing you want to do is just start closing things in the taskmanager. and yes you can close aim and it wont erase your buddy list but you could also right click on the icon the the lower right hand corner and hit close.

wait if i close all programs before i run halo, the better the performance i get? because if this is true, someone tell me, who knows this might drop my ping from 69-131 to maybe around the 30's =P but then again, im ASSUMING, so nothing ever comes true for high-hopers...well, most of the times.

If you close a program in the task manager that you dont know it might mess up windows while your using it, but if you restart it goes back to normal. Dont worry about it. But the one thing yoiu dont want to close out of is the explorer(the start menu and that stuff)

Use the leaf blower. It's your own advice.

It will be fine, just click the processes tab and click on what you want to click. There is no problem, I've done it hundreds of times. Just dont quit anything that you are not sure about. On a side note, you all are a bunch of -blam!- for not just trying it. Sorry for being rude.

Just so you all know, PING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW GOOD YOUR COMPUTER IS!!!! Its only factor is INTERNET CONNECTION. Ping is a measurement for the amount of time in milliseconds it takes for your information to reach the server host's. If you have 100 ping, you are 0.1 seconds behind the actual game. If you are downloading something, you will most likely get a horrible ping.

I know what ping is, and my connection is ethernet, so I would get sub-100 ping. for about a week now, I get more than 300 ping, close to 800, this has never happened before, I dont' know if yahoo is down or if a cable is loose or something. And I'm no -blam!- either, I just don't know that much about computers, so I want to be careful without pissing my dad off.

Hm...a few things...

AIM has a reputation for spyware and all that fun schtuff. Remember that Viewpoint Media Player that installs with AIM? It's suspected spyware/adware. I suggest getting something like trillian, that allows you not just to communicate through AIM, but also ICQ, MSN and Yahoo Messenger. The important things are, though, that it doesn't have any banners nor does it use spyware or adware.

As for task manager, I woudn't suggest closing things you don't know about. Besides, closing things won't fix them on startup if your computer is restarted. The best way to fix it is to go to the Start Menu>Run>type
msconfig
and open up the system config utility. If you click on the startup tab, you'll see all the programs that'll start upon computer startup. Some of them you can just uncheck, but others need an explanation. Just google it and it'll likely tell you what the program does.

Make sure your spyware/adware/antivirus scanners are up to date, that should take care of those loose odds and ends programs flying around your computer.

so I can un-install viewpoint player and viewpoint manager?

I'm un-installing this old game, AOL which I don't use, logitech print service, and aol coach version, would that be fine? Again I'm a total beginner to computers, so excuse me.

Hopefully I can be taught a lot and get new info I never knew before so I can also help others.

All righty un-installed all of those I put up, and man my ping went down to <140. man that works great. AOL you cheap bastards! lol

And thank you everyone for your help too, it worked out a lot

Did you make sure your AV/Spyware/Adware scanners are up to date? And do you have a firewall in place? Those might help...

If you're gonna go terminate process blindly, make sure you pay attention to the user name that the process is running under. Your best bet is to end the processes under your windows log-in name.
