If somebody posts an off-topic thread, I'm wondering if it's more useful for members to just PM a mod, or actually tell the user which forum the post belongs in. I know I've seen some moderators ask people to redirect, but more often than not it seems to disrupt the post, and a lock follows. Having an otherwise good topic full of "wrong forum" posts after it has been moved could really screw up the thread - on the other hand, if the topic is moved and redirection posts deleted, the users who tried to help could become quite upset/get the wrong impression.

Personally I think only one person needs to say "This is in the wrong forum, next time post it *mwa*", and then everyone else can go on with the topic at hand, until the thread is moved.

And a mod should be PM'd for the thread to be moved, yes.

I've seen on a few occasions where members just have to get their say in, and post the same message a few times, or just quote the original redirection and show their agreement. Is a lock inevitable in such a circumstance?

Hmm. If it gets too much (4 or 5 "Wrong forum" messages) I lock it. If it's only 1 or 2 then I move it. Do you know how long it takes to delete individual posts? :/

I've found that PMing a moderator does help. I usually tell the person that it is in the wrong forum and where it should be.

When I encounter a thread in the wrong forum, I inform the thread's creator, via private message, that Forum X is for Discussion X only, and that all Discussion Y discussion, including this thread, belongs in Forum Y. I proceed to inform a moderator via Google Talk.

I'm usually not going to put down a redirecting message in a thread unless I can at the least contribute to the discussion. If I can't, I either let someone else give the message, or send a Private Message. I'm just not sure why members continually want to repeat something that has already been established. I can understand if two members posted at the same time, but not when they have had time to read through all of the posts. Maybe people who do that have a reason...

It kicks you out of the thread after every deletion, so it's time consuming. Besides, delete too many and the thread acts screwy. Better to lock in those cases.

I've toyed with the idea of banning people who quote the first person who said it should be moved, because that's just annoying.

honestly if it is moved with consent from the mod who did it i see no problem because then questions could be asked in pms not the topic inducing more spam into the topic

  • 04.22.2006 3:43 PM PDT

best would be to make sure someone said to move it already, and if not do it yourself, then let a mod know. That way is easiest...or if you know a mod's online already, then don't even post it...makes more work for them. Just link them up and your good.

I like how you did that. e=mc2. Just kidding. Anyway, I try to be nice about it, unless I notice the same user putting wrong posts in the wrong forums all the time just to get attention. Then I'm an ass about it. I also look at their joined date before I make any harsh comments.

Sure it does, I didn't have a clue on where to post when I first joined B.net. I wouldn't want to make a new member feel unwanted just because he or she made a mistake.

But in that case an older member should be "let off" because he or she has never visited the forums, so is new to the forums. Using the join date to judge people is not the best way to do so. Anyway, everyone should have read the rules and know not to post in the wrong forums, new or old.

Their join date is one of, not the only, deciding factors I use to post in the forums. Are you telling me that you have never made the mistake of posting in the wrong forum?
