I haven't had a chance to grab the book yet (its on my Kindle's Wishlist), but after thumbing through my friend's copy of the Forerunner Saga Book One (and Google), I'd really going kinda WTF with the direction with the extended universe is going. Your comments on Grasslands really cements that for me.

While I have issues with Reach's plot, it doesn't really bother me that it does contradict Fall of Reach; and I find the idea that Reach fought for several months instead of the sudden attack from FoR more enjoyable/realistic; Halo Wars shows that humanity continued to fight for every colony they lost, including Harvest, and while humanity was outclassed, they made the Conventant pay for every piece of territory they captured.

there is nothing realistic about a planet with no fleet surviving 2 months against the largest covenant ship on record and its little dropships unopposed.

ONI definitely went full blown retard.

They're supposed to be a group of the most dedicated, smart Humans who try to make the tough decisions to ensure that their species survives.

Now, it's been a long 28 year war where pretty much every Human colony has been glassed, destroyed, or abandoned.

What is ONI's first course of action to ensure that their species lives for the next decade, let alone the next century?

"OH HERP DERP LET'S JUST GIVE OUT SOME WEAPONS TO THESE ELITES HERE AND SOME MORE WEAPONS TO THESE FUNDAMENTALIST ELITES WHO HATE THEL. YEAH YEAH THEL IS MAKING A PEACE TREATY BUT HE'S UGLY SO LET'S JUST GET RID OF HIM AND HOPE THAT A MORE HOSTILE GOVERNMENT IS SETUP SO WE CAN NEGOTIATE WITH THEM IN ORDER TO BRING ABOUT A PEACE TREATY. I KNOW THAT DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE BUT SINCE WE'RE ONI WE'RE REALLY SMART AND WE CAN DO STUFF LIKE THIS AND TRUST US HUMANITY WILL BE BETTER OFF KILLING THE ONLY MODERATE POLITICAL LEADER ON SANGHEILIOS. YUP. THAT'S US."

Not to mention that they just threw in ANOTHER Spartan-II, Naomi.

Not all the Brutes joined the Prophets. Some stayed out of a sense of pack-like loyalty to their Elite commanders, some out of fear of their Elite masters being greater then fear of the Prophets, and their own tarnished reputation. The amount of Brutes that stayed, however, is still very small, and even Jul found their sense of loylaty to be baffeling.

I see. And the other half? The Elite-Human relations?

A mix of every opinion, reaally. Some like Thel want to join us, some fear our retaliation and want to kick us while we're down, some seem to form ties with humans but still want other human supporters dead, and every facet imaginable in between. Some Elites, for example, have revoked Forerunner religion and even destroyed Forerunner relics in anger, while still others will see those who defiled Forerunner relics burned at the stake (two Elites were, for example, disemboweled and strung up for display by Telcam's group for blasphemy).

It really is chaos in Elite culture right now.

That's crazy. Why would they do this to Halo?

I haven't read many of the books, but I wouldn't go as fas as not buying anything that 343i puts out. Everyone who works there either is a former Bungie employee or is a HUGE Halo fan. I personally am looking forward to what they have to release and how they're going to continue MC's story. Halo: CEA also looks phenomenal, I know that they didn't actually have to make the whole game but the maps and campaign levels look amazing visually. I'm going to continue to support Bungie as they come out with their new series because I know it will be awesome but I'll also support 343i because I love Halo and it's one of the best stories to follow and be a part of.

To make things even more unbelievable Paragnosky has Halsey stand trial publicly for her creation of the Spartans and then Halsey publicly outs her for the authorization of the Spartan-2 and 3 Project leading to everyone wanting to dismantle ONI. During all of this the remaining Spartans are given information on their identities and families, some decide to reunite with their long lost love ones. Having thought their children died long ago, these poor people find out their kids are very much alive, the children they thought they lost were clones and their real children were turned into super soldiers.............it doesn't go well. The book ends with Humanity heading towards civil war and Paragnosky planning on making Orion style Spartans.

I just finished the book. Whatever respect I thought I held for you as an honest person with an opinion just got blown out the window. To any and all people reading this right now, know he's full of utter bull -blam!-.

Halsey is taken from the Dyson Sphere--now called Trevelyan, in honer of Kurt's real last name--by Naomi, Mal, Vaz and Osman aboard the Port Stanely .

She is taken aboard the ship, and given over to Parangosky, who has a research station orbiting Installation 03.

Parangosky then promptly tells her she died on Reach, and that is all the public will know of her. She will not execute Halsey because she's too valuable, (she'll likely divert her to the Infinity project) but her life is effectively screwed; she is, for all intents and purposes, Parangosky's -blam!-.

However, no public trial is held--I'm not even sure there is a trial, just Parangosky getting her words in--the public is not made aware of the Spartans' true origins, the only thing even remotely resembling the Spartans having contact with their families is Parangosky allowing them to read their files if they so wished, nobody makes an attempt to kill the Arbiter at all, and in fact the ending suggests that the Arbiter took out Telcam (left on a cliffhanger, so unknown).

And in fact, humanity is no closer to a civil war now then they were during the Insurrection (as there is still dissident humans). The attempts to dismantle the growing insurgency on the planet Venezia (a world left behind by the UNSC during the Covenant war, already known before hand to house terrorist and Rebel sympathizers) are being operated by Mal, Vaz, and an ONI Spook called Spenser, with Osman, BB, and Naomi providing support to Telcam.

UNSC is not making an attempt to disband ONI, there is no public out cry for such an act, and nobody has found out about Kilo-Five's mission to kill the Arbiter yet either, so that's good.

Really the only thing OP got right was that there is a Spartan 4 program already in the works, but instead using adult volunteers. The Spartan 4s are attatched to the UNSC Infinity project.

Everything else was utter horse -blam!- to such an Nth degree I can't fathom how big of a bull -blam!- spew-fest it was. I actually had to read what I quoted three times to re-insure myself over and over again that what OP wrote was actually what he wrote.

Thank you someone who reads beyond the lines and understand it. The book is written in a certain way the story does not reflect the true nature of each group but acts of certain individuals.

A reason why ONI wants to support these elites may be to make sure that anyone who has anti-human sentiment will come out and they will ally with these religious zealots and so the humans can help track each enemy and effectively neutralize them.

I believe this missions true purpose was to pull out the enemies from hiding.

who has a research station orbiting Installation 03.

That is stupid. Grey did some math once and found that each installation is roughly 21 000 light years from each other. Even assuming that 03 is close to Earth, that still puts it a few thousand light years from Earth, too far for Humanity's slow slipspace drives to travel and arrive in a reasonable time frame. In addition, Ajw said that they escaped by dropping the Dyson Sphere out of slipspace. If a single Halo could slow traffic throughout the Galaxy (43 years after the start of it's journey, no less!) then a Dyson Sphere dropping out of slipspace should have sent the whole thing down the drain.

But the biggest majority are the ones who want Humanity to die, right?

Who accepted the Brutes? Do these same Elites who accept Brutes accept Humans, or not?

Another thing to add to this, is there a change in PoV or is it the same "Humans must die; they suck boo hoo" all the way through?

The ONI has installed some Forerunner-class prototype engines on some of their more advanced ships; Port Stanely was one such ship. They can travel far faster then any UNSC or Covenant drives, but they haven't quite cracked how to perfectly land them in a precise distance from their target.

Also you must remember when regarding the Dyson Sphere that the Halos dropping out in and out of slipspace disrupted the Forerunner connection to it because the Forerunners had a lot more traffic and much heavier objects then either the UNSC and Covenant combined at the height of their powers could ever hope to achieve.

It was also suggested by Halsey that some of the technology found in the Dyson Sphere could point to other Halo locations, so it may have been a very recent find.

As I said earlier, its all a mix of different motives. Mdama, one of the Keeps with an anti-Arbiter sect (where officially, the Keep's Kaidon supports Thel, some of the Elders like Jul see it differently) tolerate the Brutes but still consider them beneath them.

Telcam has a mix in his forces, for example, though they have a common goal, to kill the Arbiter, just different Motives. Jul wants to stop a peace treaty with us while Telcam just sees him as a particuarly powerful heretic that needs to be expelled violently. Jul, who was captured, it now being forced to work, or otherwise be kept, in the Dyson Sphere with a group of scientists (presumably under heavy guard). He didn't seem like he had any indication of willingly helping us out though; indeed, he's only being cooporative until he has his chance to escape. So he still resents us.

Other Elites, however, seem to be taking a liking to Phillips, who has an inate talent for solving an arum. Essentially a Rubicks cube on steroids used to teach Elite children disciplin and patience, he can solve any of them in record time. So perhaps he's the firs example of Elites actually kind of taking a liking to us.

The ending suggests the Elites have broken into full scale fighting amongst the different factions, with actual glassing going on against some of the other Keeps.

Sorry, I have to go now though; I was typing fast too so forgive any spelling errors.

The whole "Forerunner tech in human slipspace drives" is a completely different issue (and a Deus ex Machina to boot), but that is not the point.

However, many ships or Halos the Forerunners were playing with is still minuscule compared to the Dyson sphere. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think the Forerunners ever had an object the size of a solar system drop out of slipspace suddenly. I don't even think they had a similar amount of material in slipspace either. A Dyson Sphere is really big. You don't go throwing those around without consequence.

Evidently the Sangheili are finished then. There is no way they will pull through from this. And judging from the Return, the Sangheili are still having issues with ships, technology, religions, politics, ethics and all that which obviously means that whatever alliance they try to establish with Humanity fails miserably and leaves them doomed as a species.

  • 10.26.2011 8:02 PM PDT

Signatures are for squares.

There WAS multiple shieldworlds, remember. Those all had to be moved somehow, I'm sure. Let's not forget that Slipspace was bogged down after 12 rings had been moved throughout the system at the same time. Plus all of the other Forerunner ships and materials being moved through slipspace.

It's possible the Dyson Sphere came out of slipspace, and it WOULD put a massive strain on slipspace, but it's certainly not impossible.

  • 10.26.2011 8:04 PM PDT

Oh good grief, what did I just walk into. I'll admit I skimmed through some of the book, some parts were difficult to get into; like the human-elite sub plot, every other major plot point made me think WTF? I should have read the book more thoroughly before going on a rant about it and for that I'm sorry, but the main points about the story remain; Paragnosky and ONI have gone off the rails, the Spartan programs dark secrets are out of the bag, Paragnosky's gunning for Halsey, but if Halsey is going to be made a scapegoat for ONI's misdeads she's bringing the rest of ONI down with her.

The Elites are turning on each other, but attaching humanity is somewhat on the back burner. The shield world has been brought out of slip-space way too easily and ONI has suddenly found itself with an over abundance of forerunner tech at it's disposal even before that event. ONI's planning a new generation of spartans, but the book make no mention of S-3 Gamma Company or even hints at the potential disaster they could become when their meds run out that negate the side effects of the illegal augmentations Kurt gave them.

If anything were to re-ignite hostilities between humans and the former members of the covenant it would be a bunch of un-checked vengeful and unhinged super soldiers that despite their physical size and training are still underneath it all traumatized 12 year old children. Instead we are given a story that is just poorly thought out and seems to have everyone trying to betray each other and act out of character just for the sake of silly plot twists and drama for the sake of drama. The whole book wasted any dangling plot threads that Ghosts of Onyx set up that if followed would have arguably made a better and more believable story.

So was I wrong to go on a super rant after merely skimming through the book? Yes. But calling me an uber troll that is simply pulling stuff out of my butt is a bit much.

This book focuses way too much on vilifying Halsey. The shield world is pretty much made an after thought once the Spartans and Halsey leave, which just blows my mind. Halsey went to Onyx under the guise of finding Forerunner tech, but secretly was planning on saving her Spartans from what she thought was an un-winnable war. Although technically she did both and given that she helped reveal and protect a massive shield world( UNSC Trevelyan research facility is keeping gaurd over it.Interesting bit, according to some papers in Halsey's journal that's Kurt's real last name), you'd think Paragnosky would think Halsey is worth keeping around instead of being used a scapegoat.
