I have been pondering this for quite some time. Why are grunts the only covenant in the game that speak English? I can understand that elites can't speak it as there mouths open 4 ways and they have no lips, Jackals as they just have a kind of snout like a crocodile thing, and hunters because well...they kind of have a jelloy mush thing to them =S. but why grunts? You would think they have there own little language to speak. Did they learn it for the soul purpose of insulting the humans then running away? I cant see them using it for diplomatic translation purposes as they are kind of on the stupid side. well post your thoughts as to why here, and if there is an answer to this question in like one of the halo book please tell me.

The Chief has a translater device inside the sandwiched layer of his suit so He can listen to wat they say. But I still ponder about the part of the Elites, Jackals and Hunters.

yeah I remember on the level flawless cowboy when you enter the tunnels Cortana saying something about using his suit translation thing to monitor the covenant broadcasts. so wouldn't that mean you would be able to hear all the different covenant talking? unless only grunts were broadcasting...

The Covenant learned English long before our race encountered their kind.

Besides, would you want to read a book or play a game where it was impossible to understand anything being said in a cutscene or on an alien planet? In those situations, they're not speaking "English" rather, they're speaking whatever language is appropriate for their location and circumstance. The fact that it's "translated" into English is one of the many perks of 3rd Person Omniscient.

Hmmmm i am positive i've heard the Elite speak English a few times in a taunging mannor it kinda sounds like a low grunting sound.

I think they can talk "some" English just not as well as te grunts. Besides i think it's hilarious some of the things them little guys come out with lol

So when they shout "Noooooooooo" when you attatch a plasma nade to them it's actually "ooooooooooooN?" as in "Oooooooon me?" lol that doesn't make sense because either i'm one of them devil worshipers that speaks backwards (excluding any IF any present company) or i could understand what they say some times lol..

WTF? NO!

Wort wort wort isn't even English, so you can't say "Trow trow trow"!

I wasn't even being serious when I said elites spoke English. It was quite obvious I was joking.

I mean when they make those indistinct noises, it resembles backwards English.

There's a nice section on it on HBO about it. Just search for "elite speak". See, its english run through a vocoder, backwards. I think what they use slows it down and runs it backwards. And I'm pretty sure they used Sgt. Johnson's voice.

So in other words, "ArrrrrROBODA!" would be "[Un]stoppable! Raah!" in english. And "Wort Wort Wort" would be Johnson's "Go Go Go". And so on.

As for grunts learning english, that should be in the Halo books somewhere. Can't remember off the top of my head.

Yeh that's what i mean... They often say it when you've stopped firing at them for like a minute and they've regrouped and scurrying around.. Kinda reminds me of taunting how they say whatever they're saying..

One thing i heard them say once i swear it sounded like "so it comes down to this.."
