Ok, I understand the curse words, but a few just don't make since. I am not trying to evade the profanity filter, but you must learn the words that I'm saying shouldn't be censored.

First of, "non straight". Sure, all the mods and some members think little kids will use the word offensively, but I they really wouldn't. Besides, that would break the "Play nice, don't be a jerk" rule. After you take away this, all it is is a -blam!-ity. Why aren't straight or hetero banned?

If they won't take away non-straight, could they at least take away h**** (opposite of hetero). I mean it's a prefix for a million words.

No offence, but it seems that Achronos just copied and pasted a list and called it a day, paying no attention to what was on it.

So, what do you guys think? Should non-straight and opposite of hetero be banned?

Please don't use the excuse "little kids will abuse it blah blha blah". This is just crap, most on here are mature enough not to use it wrong, and those who aren't can be banned.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

The only real answer you'll likely to get is you have no rights, play nice. Bungie does whatever they want.

Well they made a community forum for a reason.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

The profanity list hasn't changed in a long time because doing so requires a code update and test resources, and we prefer to spend those resources elsewhere. As such, no evaluation of the current composition of the profanity filter has been done, although I have posted on numerous occassions that it is probably due for a review.

As the site is generally dark and not receiving signficiant updates (content or code) for the time being, expect no changes in the short term.

Well, hopefully they update it in the future, but really why was it blocked in the first place?

I seem to remember that they just used the list of cencored words in MSN or something similar. This could be very wrong, though.

We need a madness to the method!

Oh look, this thread again.

I believe Achronos does need to tune a couple words since the forums have gotten a little bit better in terms of maturity. However, he keeps dodging that by saying that, "It'll take away from developing content for the site." To be completely honest, being able to say "not-straight" without using Unicode 00AD would be nice since I spend more time in Private Groups rather than the new Crimson forum or whatnot.

Of course, I cannot speak for everybody. Everyone uses the site in their own unique way, so maybe just making it safe for everyone is the best solution.

Case in point it blammed out.....a synonym for intercourse in the OP. I've always thought that one was dumb.

That and the political party that ran Germany in the 30's and 40's.

Yah, both of these as well.

Although it makes since with some of the words now.

Also, I've probably not used what Achronos used, but I have ran a website that used a profanity filter, and it called them out from a text file saved in the directory. To change it all I had to do was update the text file.

I'm not sure how Achronos does it, but he always makes it seem much more complicated than it should be.

Honestly, I may just have read that as a joke 4 years ago and now I think it's something I read as a piece of information.

Key

Achronos DID get a default list generated by a generic entity (Microsoft?) wherein he added a few and removed a few words. So (thus is just a guess) probably about 75% of that list is not handpicked. Also, when's the last time you had to say (opposite of hetero)genius? Or anything else with that prefix? I think it's worth the casualty of conversations involving the prefix (opposite of hetero) to remove bigoted conversations about same sex relations (the majority of conversations in the flood are of this maturity level).

In addition, I doubt it's going to get changed anytime soon. It'd be frightfully easy to change, but I just don't ink Acky wants to (based on previous posts by him).

  • 10.27.2011 4:27 PM PDT

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

I think I've seen Acky directly reference MS as the source of the list of words.

I've also seen him admit that it needs tweaking but that it's a low priority, which should resolve the question in the OP.
